Chapter 106: Separation of Family (Part 1)

Regarding the case in the Ding capital where Shen Yuan mistakenly killed Sun Cai Nan, the case was trialled in the most vigorous and fast manner never seen before. By feeding him a mute medication might not necessary mean that one did not want to kill him, but with Fu Xiu Yi’s cautious nature, most probably one fear that it might be suspicious if he died in the prison.

A bitter smile slowly appeared on Shen Yuan’s lips. If successful one was called a king and if defeated one was called a bandit. He had known what kind of person Fu Xiu Yi was at the beginning. When one work under Fu Xiu Yi, one must already be prepared that there was a possibility that one’s ending was as such, but he did not expect that the ending arrived so quickly.

There seemed to sound some footsteps in the darkness, and those footsteps were rather slow and sounded different from the wardens’. When he looked up towards the footsteps, he could only see a purple dress coming closer under the dim torch.

Walking forward, the young female had a delicate appearance and gave him a gentle smile as she looked at him, “Second Older Brother.”

It was not easy for Shen Miao to stop laughing. She looked at Shen Yuan, “Can not Second Older Brother guess my purpose?”

‘You want to deal with the Second household?’ Shen Yuan wrote on the ground.

And yes this chapter clearly shows characters in the court. And I’m looking forward to new twists in the plot. Will Shen Yaun tell her about his and Prince Ding’s plans regarding her dad?     I was close enough to telling his unfortunate fate. Though I wonder if they force fed him that mute medicine because though he is not too smart, he actually has enough common sense to know what kind of danger he was working for.

    I wonder who’s next now that the 2nd household is pretty much dealt with.

    Can’t wait for her to start on Prince Ding. Now just wondering how the Little Marquis is fitting into the story. He’s been running around with his buddies doing stuff and we don’t know what yet.

  36. I rly rly wanted SM to visit Shen Yuan in prison when he is in a dishelved state, at his worst. Thank you author for giving me that satisfaction. Because what good is all the planning and plotting if you can’t rub it in the face in the end.

  45. Tnyhy, thanks a lot. And yes, this is the chapter we’ve all been waiting for in the Arc that is Shen Yuan’s Fall! Right, join me at my seat among the Greek chorus as I rubberneck his grand crash.

    The curtain lifts again and we are treated to the climax of the second act in this tragicomedy. Shen Gui’s colleagues at court are treated to a glimpse of his actual self; egotistical, grasping and self-interested to the point that he doesn’t even care about his family, his oh-so-intelligent _firstborn son_ that is widely known as having the potential to be a great official at court. People are slowly pulling away from him and he doesn’t realise it at all. *Snerk*. Little did he know that Shen Yuan’s fall is also the herald of his own end *foreshadowing intensifies*.

    Shen Yuan had fallen far. We see him miserable and finally hopeless in the middle of the jail. I had half hoped that he might remember Shen Qing and how miserable and afraid she must have been at the end of her life. But no, we don’t even see him get humanised for even one iota. He remains selfish, focused on his own failed bid for power without regard for who he had stepped on the way to get there, including his full-blooded sister. For that, he does not have even a grain of my mercy.

    The lights dim at the stage and a spotlight shone towards stage left as a figure enters. Ah, who is this elegant young woman who calmly walks the depths of living hell as if she was strolling down an avenue lined with wisteria trees? It could be no one but Shen Miao, of course, our once and future empress.

    This is the encounter we’ve all been waiting for, folks. Hang on to your seats.

    Alright, I don’t know the depths of the musical repertoire of Beijing Opera, or even any other opera from the Chinese mainland regions. So if you’ll forgive me for drawing on Western classical music. When she reaches this dramatic point and asked Shen Yuan back:

    I could imagine the orchestra clashing in the background, the chorus lamenting, cursing, reflecting of all the wrong turns that Shen Yuan had taken to lead him here. It’s Carl Orff’s ‘O Fortuna’, which has lines with such memorable translation in English such as:

    Fate – monstrous
    and empty,
    you whirling wheel,
    you are malevolent,
    well-being is vain
    and always fades to nothing,

    Ironically, it doesn’t only apply to Shen Yuan, it applies to Shen Miao too. It’s fatalistic, but then what isn’t fatalistic about Shen Miao’s life? She had trusted the good will of other people in her previous life, and look where that got her. Did they repay her kindness and compassion? No. Was there anyone who looked out for her and helped her? No. She only wanted her family to live and survive, but if the cost of that was sullying her previously clean hands with the blood of her enemies to achieve that, she’d do it.

    It’s just too bad that Shen Yuan died without really knowing why Shen Miao wanted him dead (and how she even wanted Prince Ding dead). If there’s a good audience for a villain monologue, it’s certainly a mute and broken prisoner. It’s not as if anyone would believe him if he was somehow able to write down what Shen Miao is. It would increase his horror that much more to realise that all this time, he’d been playing against someone completely out of his league. What we have instead is Shen Yuan who is afraid that Shen Miao’s not completely stable (really, Shen Yuan, you’re seeing it all wrong–she’s far more dangerous _sane_ than insane).

    Her revenge is already grand enough even without that, though. I can’t wait to see the final act and close this chapter of Shen Miao’s life and move on.

  46. …In her own way, I think Shen Miao is the craziest, most unhinged female protagonist I’ve read. I’ve seen really messed up ones, ruthless ones, ones with no conscience or morals…

    But usually, they’re pragmatic. They scheme and kill but they don’t make a highly risky visit to a prison on their own AND spill plans and secret knowledge JUST to taunt someone.

    She really did visit him in prison. I don’t think it would implicate her in any way regarding this visit. She can just claim being filial xD plus in their minds, she is an idiot. Outsiders will likely not think she set up her ‘intelligent and gifted’ cousin. Like Z said she covered her tracks well and she used chess pieces, JCC and SCN.
