“Mother, everyone is innocent in this matter.” Shen Yuan laughed grimly, “Do not tell me I am not innocent?” He tolerated and continued, “Mother, the rumours has spread out more intense and if the Shen family provoke matters now, one fear that the entire residence would suffer.” He looked at Ren Wan Yun and said in a serious tone, “Even if Mother have the same feelings of ending in mutual destruction, could it be to also include Younger Brother?”

Ren Wan Yun’s body shook and was unable to suppress the trembling. One knew that she indeed had that mindset. It was admittedly true that the hate she had for Shen Miao was unusual but the entire Shen residence’s indifference, Shen Gui’s heartlessness, Old Shen Furen’s pragmatic acts and the Third household’s detached eyes of a bystander made Ren Wan Yun felt a great anger towards the Shen residence. But Shen Yuan happened to point out one thing, which is that if the Shen residence really suffered a calamity, even Shen Yuan Bo would not avoid it. Since the ancient times the Emperors loved the eldest sons and the commoners doted on the youngest son. Shen Yuan was intelligent since young and Ren Wan Yun did not really worry over him, but Shen Yuan Bo was young and naughty so Ren Wan Yun doted him to the core. This was actually somewhat ridiculous, the only surviving female from a massacre case who was unarmed, was regarded as the culprit. Sometimes the matter of the world could be so strange.

When Shen Miao reached the doors of the prison, the warden was surprised for a moment when he saw her and went forward to speak, “Who is it?”

“My Young Lady is the Fifth Young Lady of the General’s residence’s Shen family.” Jing Zhe stepped forward and placed a sachet stuffed with silver onto the hands of the warden and said, “Here deliberately to visit Eldest Young Lady.”

Shen Miao took the token that Shen Qiu gave her from her sleeves and showed it to the warden. Shen Miao thanked him again and after the warden and the few guards stepped aside, then she slowly took the steps down.

Walking down the long steps, there was a cell right at the end which had iron railings all around. There was only a fist sized window in the cell and seemed to be where important criminals were located. There was a row of torches against the stone wall but the torches were faltering, making the silhouette look strange.

The cell was covered with straw and there was a dirty quilt bed inside. Most likely the quilt was infested with lice as one could vaguely see some small black material on it. And the person who had the quilt around was sitting on the straw with the head buried in the knees, unsure if the person was asleep or not.

Shen Miao looked quietly for a long time before walking in and reaching her hands out to tap the iron railings a few times.

The person who had their head in their knees suddenly raised her head and showed a slightly frightened expression. When one saw clearly that it was Shen Miao, the frightened look turned into anger as she shouted out with gritted teeth, “Shen Miao!”

“It is me.” Shen Miao gently took a step back and avoided Shen Qing’s scratches when she rushed up. Her guesses were indeed correct as in the next moment, Shen Qing rushed up and reached out her hands past the iron railing, she wanted to grab onto Shen Miao but her action was futile as the railings restrained her.

“It seems that you have not learnt to be smart.” Shen Miao laughed out and looked at her calmly and unruffled, “Do not waste the effort, it is useless.”

Shen Qing put her hands down resentfully and suddenly burst into laughter, “Shen Miao, are you here to put a demonstration in front of me? Are you here to see how miserable I am? Let me tell you, there will be a day where you will be a hundred times more miserable than me!”

“What a pity.” Shen Miao looked at her with pity, “Even if there is really such a day, you will not be able to see it.”

Shen Qing was surprised for a moment and there was fear in her eyes. She had been locked in this cell for a few days and she was unclear what was going on. She had been spoiled all this while and thought that night with Prince Yu in Wo Long Temple was the most painful thing in life, but did not think that subsequent events would be even more frightening, pregnancy, returning banquet, marriage and then the night of the bloody massacre, and now she was reduced to a criminal in prison. Would Shen Yuan really help her?

    • NOPE! I don’t feel a slick of sympathy for her. NOT EVEN ONE TINY BIT. Everything happened stemmed from the greed and jealousy of her heart. She envied Shen Miao for being the daughter of the Eldest Shen, then wanted to fight for the Prince..god knows why anyone would do that, but hey…she wanted it..she let her mom did all these things.     • Thank God, I thought I was the only one to pity her. And yet, I don’t blame SM for making her fall to this point because I know that
      1)SM truly loved Shen Qing as a sister at first and yet, Shen Qing never had good intentions for her
      2)had it been SM who had been raped, SQ would have laughed to her face

  14. Of course our Empress Jiajiao already thought of SY forcing his mother in choosing between the youngest and the oldest. A mother’s heart is very protective but just as the previous comment says, the love is different for each and everyone of them. So unless you have more use for the person then you will be saved SQ. A life for a life since there is no free lunch in this world of yours. Only the strong has the power and the weak has to obey. The rules of the jungle is the savage truth of our reality. So even if RWY chooses the former or the latter it will still spell DOOM for their lives with no survivors

    I guess it safe to say goodbye to Shen Qing then? If she have an ounce of kindness, I am sure Shen Miao will leave her from her revenge, but noooo she must become greedy and taking SM life. Well, can’t really blame SQ. The way her parents raise her is the biggest mistake that make her like that.

  17. So, In the face of these things, Ren Wan Yun has two choices…
    1. take revenge against the Shen household and implicate all of the members, and implicating everyone in the Shen, including youngest son to die( a member of the royal family has died because of an assassination, the punishment must be at least capital punishment right?)
    2. just let Shen Qing die a dog death. Imprisoned and accused as an evildoer! Everyone in Shen family would be safe with her as the exception

    The fate of Shen family rest on Ren Wan Yun and Shen Yuan(mainly him because he has the means to). Shen Miao literally gambled yet again!

      • Shen Miao didn’t give Shen Yuan any choice to begin with, we need also to remember he have just return to take his official post in the government, so there not a lot of thing he could do 🤷if only his father will help then maybe he could do something about it but we know that will never happened

  19. Woah. This makes me think of Chess. I’m really bad at it but my grandma would always say that if I’m going on offensive (using the queen) make sure that there’s something defending it.

    Shen Miao really thought this through.. my gosh. She knew that father was useless from the start so she really doesn’t need to defend against him. For Shen Yuan, she knew had ambitions and took advantage of that. For that Ruan Yuan or something, she also knew about that seventh young master. Shen Miao left Shen Qing absolutely bare – stripping her off her pawns.

  23. I don’t know but when i read this i just remember about 2nd aunt of Hua Xi Wan at Eight Treasures Trousseau. That mother is really too much for me just because of her son, she not even slighly think of her daughter happiness.
    In this although Ren Wan Yun not a really good mother but she still think a bit of Shen Qing.
    When i read about this i can’t help to compare this two mother….
    sigh…

Well, i still wouldn’t pity SQ after I remember the first chapter of this novel and how Shen Miao understands how it feels to have hope in despair and how it feels to have that hope crushed before her. As for Ren Wan Yun her situation is still better than how SM lost Wan Yu and Fu Ming. She wants shen yuan to save SQ but she should’ve been a little more caring to him, now he hates her.

    But it seems Shen Qing has become a bit smarter than before, being able to realize the situation she is in.

  27. Our empress’ revenge against Shen Qing and Prince Yu was really brilliant! Even if Shen Yuan and Shen Gui had the compassion to help Shen Qing, they wouldn’t be able to trace it back to Shen Miao. AND the one that exterminated the household was actually the Chen family. Shen Miao got her revenge by laying down the foundation aka starting the rumors and getting the Chen family’s support. Just. Brilliant.

  28. Shen Miao’s revenge is more brilliant then I realized. She’s going to make Shen Qing feel the pain of being betrayed by her family–just like Shen Miao was betrayed by her relatives, including SQ, last lifetime. Far crueler than just letting her die in the massacre. This is chillingly good.

      Do i miss something? I never read the part of no. 3 and 4.

      • Yeah… Shen Dong Ling doesn’t appear in the novel in the front part (in order to survive under RWY rule, she and her mother had to be invisible). As for no. 4… That daughter died… RWY made a lot of Shu children accidentally die that is why the ranking of that generation is like jumping around

  35. Here is one line that threw me for a loop–

    Really? You have no grievance with a man that tortured and raped you until you couldn’t even talk for some time? What is she talking about no grievance? I did not know she could be so forgiving. I guess all her hatred is saved for one person.

    Anyway, Shen Miao’s plot is well thought out. I knew Shen Yuan Bo was Old Shen Furen’s favorite but I did not realize how much RWY loved him. She seemed to accept when Old Shen Furen took him to live with her and he hung out with grand ma a lot anyway. She seemed to have become completely possessed with her daughter. Of course her sons are her ticket to staying in the household, providing there is a household and providing that she still wants to live. But she doesn’t want to live. I guess I am a little surprised that she cares enough about Bo Er to want him to live on even if she doesn’t want to. If she drags the entire household down who will take care of him?

    Shen Miao knows this family inside out.

  39. I find it kinda funny that Shen Qing realized that Shen Miao pulled the strings, yet still believe that Ren Wan Yun and Shen Yuan could do anything.

    Girl, Shen Miao planned for the massacre of the a ROYAL PRINCE and not only got away with it, she implicated YOU and the Second Household with it. Compare to that, Shen Yuan and Ren Wan Yun are NOTHING.

  41. imagine if shen qing’s end was so bad, how will mei furen’s end be? at least shen qing was not completely behind shen miao’s previous demise. 90% of shen miao’s misery was because of mei furen, 5% was because of prince ding and 5% was because of 2nd and 3rd residences. shen qing was such a minor character in comparison to prince ding and mei furen…. they’re probably gonna have such miserable deaths
