“Marrying or not is not important.” The most hated thing for Shen Miao was Pei Lang’s seemingly confident appearance, as if everything was within the control of his hands thus he would not be able to see others’ struggles and only did what he thought was ‘right’. A bucket of cold water seemed to have been poured down on Pei Lang’s heart as it was surprisingly cold. It was evident that he only did it due to pros and cons of the matter but under Shen Miao’s clear gaze, it was like some of his heart’s hidden wishes seemed to be glimpsed. Suddenly he was in tough straits.

Pei Lang evaded Shen Miao’s eyes and collected himself before continue speaking, “You still have to marry others if you do not marry into the Eastern Palace. This is the only living route out. By marrying me, perhaps one can withstand this.”

“Why does Gentleman Pei help me?” Shen Miao said it lightly but in her words, there seemed to be containing some other tone that make one unable to pinpoint. She said, “We only have a transactional relationship due to Liu Ying and it can be said of a master-servant relationship. I am the master and you are the servant. From the beginning to the end it is me who is threatening you and if I am being confined, isn’t this to your advantage? Following Fu Xiu Yi is a thousand times better than following me so for Gentleman Pei to help me like this, those who don’t know would think that you are sincere.”

There was some sarcasm in it that made Pei Lang’s ears did not like to hear. He did not know why Shen Miao was polite with him at some times and at other times would seemed to be hostile with him. Perhaps females were all so fickle?

But he could not answer Shen Miao’s question. It was because he himself did not know why he was doing it.

Shen Miao smiled gently, “Even if I marry Gentleman Pei, it would be the most inferior plan. What kind of identity Gentleman Pei will be using to marry me? How does one explain to Prince Ding’s side? You will not reveal yourself because of me. Gentleman Pei is a good chess piece thus I am not willing to casually use it like this.”

Pei Lang kept shaking his head as he heard it. He wanted to negate Shen Miao words as he felt that Shen Miao was still young and did not know how important the lifelong event was to a female. This was only just a pique and in the future when one understood the rationale and suffered, then it would be too late to regret. But when he looked up and saw Shen Miao’s expression, he could not speak.

Shen Miao had a serious expression and her cold indifference was like she was tired of the matters of the outside world, as if there was an unconscious disgust. She really did not care.

But how could a female not care about the person that would be accompanying them for a lifetime?

Pei Lang looked at Shen Miao blankly.

As the atmosphere was in a deadlock, one heard a malicious ridicule coming from the back, “One did not expect that there would be such a romantic affair.”

Shen Miao suddenly turn back and did not know when did two masked men clad in black appeared. These two people were carrying long swords and headed towards Shen Miao.

Pei Lang quickly pulled Shen Miao over to dodge as Shen Miao shouted out sternly, “Who are you?”

“Young Lady Shen must not blame us. If one has to blame then blame that you are blocking other’s road.” The two persons laughed and one of them sweep towards Pei Lang while the other headed towards Shen Miao.

It was killing technique without leaving any room of survival.

Shen Miao cursed in her heart as she did not expect that this place that Pei Lang found would actually be convenient for others to silence them. She held the bracelet on her wrist but this bracelet was only useful in short distance. When the needles were about to be released, one however saw two stones hurling in the air and hit exactly at the knees of the two black clad persons. The two of them shouted out in pain and fell onto the ground.

Two swords light flashed and two people swept pass and the black clad persons’ sword were now taken and pointed at their chest.

Everything happened too quickly that there was no opportunity for anyone to breath. The two person that appeared later were dressed as Palace guards and Shen Miao saw them clearly.

Pei Lang was about to talk when he saw that a person flip over from the roof. The person had a tall stature, wearing a purple gold robe with a silver mask and a pair of peach blossoms eyes that were as sharp as knives.

It was Prince Rui.

“Your Highness Prince Rui…” Pei Lang whispered. He was intelligent so after a moment of thinking, he knew that the two people dressed as guards should be Prince Rui’s subordinate. Previously the black clad people who came to kill, one did not know who they belong to. Even though he did not know what kind of relationship Shen Miao and Prince Rui had, Pei Lang dare not neglect him. Even though he was extremely vigilant in his heart, there was still a polite smile on his face as he cupped his hands together, “Many thanks to Your Highness Prince Rui for lending a hand to help.”

Prince Rui did not speak and glance coldly at him. Although there was half a silver mask that hid his face, making one unable to see what kind of expression he had on, Pei Lang however felt particularly cold that one would have chills on their backs.

Shen Miao frowned but Prince Rui had already grabbed her wrist and turned to walk out. Pei Lang was shocked and quickly call out, “Prince Rui cannot.”

The two guards ferociously blocked in front of him.

Both guards were fierce and sinister, exuding an air of killing without battling an eye. Pei Lang was a scholar and was not skilled in martial arts thus there was no way even if he wanted to help. It was Shen Miao who’s stumbling as she followed others still turned her head around and calmly said, “Gentleman Pei return first, I still have some matters with Prince Rui.”

Prince Rui’s pace had gotten even faster.

Pei Lang looked at the two figures’ disappearing back and the two guards inexplicably looked at him before leaving.

However there were still two bodies on the floor so Pei Lang could not say any longer. He did not know what was the relationship between Shen Miao and Prince Rui but… His heart suddenly felt somewhat empty.

Shen Miao was feeling pain from where Xie Jing Xing was holding her. Xie Jing Xing did not say a single word as he walked quickly while she tried her best to kept up with Xie Jing Xing’s pace. However the other party was tall and had long legs that she couldn’t keep up with and almost stumbled several times.

At the end, the anger in Shen Miao’s heart came up and she angrily said, “Let go of me!”

Xie Jing Xing walked to a corridor where there was no one before violently letting go of his hand. Shen Miao was grasped by him for most of the journey and when he suddenly released his hand, she almost fell over. After stabilising herself, her anger started bubbling up, “You are crazy.”

This garden was somewhat more outside that the previous neglected garden. Shen Miao was somewhat afraid that others would see and wanted to head out but Xie Jing Xing pulled her back by the shoulders and pushed her against the wall before pressing her hands and looked coldly at her.

He was wearing a silver mask and the outline of his face were revealed with a beautiful chin but his lips were tight. There was no longer the usual frivolous smile on them but instead fury were gushing out. He said one word at a time, “Shen Miao, you only have such capabilities?”

Shen Miao frowned at him.

Xie Jing Xing reached his hand out to hold her chin to force her to look straight at him. He looked down at Shen Miao from a higher position, just like a hunter looking at its prey. Shen Miao did not like to be looked from the top down and struggled to get out.

But she was after all a female, so how could she compete with Xie Jing Xing’s strength? That little strength that she had could only tickle Xie Jing Xing if used on him. Xie Jing Xing easily dispelled the struggling and slightly flexed his knees against her legs, making her unable to move.

However this gesture was even more ambiguous.

Shen Miao asked, “What exactly do you want to do?”

One was unable to distinguish Xie Jing Xing’s tone of voice, “Luo Ling, Su Ming Feng, Feng Zi Xian and now there is a Pei Lang. So many people want to be the hero to save the beauty. I have underestimated you.”

Shen Miao did not speak.

The strength in his hands suddenly increase and her chin started to hurt, making her brow frown slightly.

But that young man gritted his teeth and said, “Don’t care who one marry to and don’t care if one was force to married. You want to marry into the Crown Prince residence?”

Shen Miao’s heart moved. Xie Jing Xing had heard the conversation between Pei Lang and her. This man favourite thing to do was to see everything from the dark and if it was on normal days, Shen Miao would not think too much about it but at this moment there was a little bit of indignant in her heart. It was like someone had seen some secrets that one was unwilling to be made public or that the awful side of herself had be seen and she was ashamed that anger came out.

She said coldly with a smile, “What does it matter if one marries to the Crown Prince? Anyways you also know that I want to be an Empress. At the end the Crown Prince will need to sit on the Imperial throne. Maybe when I enter the the Eastern Palace, fought the Crown Prince Consort to death and raise myself up, which then I will be Ming Qi’s future Empress Shen. What is wrong with it?”

The words were said a bit too viciously that Xie Jing Xing’s face became even more livid.

He also laughed but it was so cold, “Unfortunately the Crown Prince will not be able to sit on the Imperial throne.”

Shen Miao did not know where did Xie Jing Xing’s unfathomable anger came from but at this moment she was already taken hostage and interrogated in such an embarrassing position, thus she felt very upset and wronged. Perhaps others would be impulsive and unable to grasp one emotions during such situation, just like she did not know where was that grievance feelings came from but all the unhappiness that she felt during these days all poured out.

Xie Jing Xing continued to pinch her chin, press against her legs and locked her hands. He was unbelievably handsome that even when in anger there was a different amorous feeling. That evil air hovered around him, making Shen Miao believe for a moment that this frivolous and indifferent appearance Xie Jing Xing was only one side of him and the other side would make one’s heart chill when he was cold, inflexible and furious.

No matter how good the scenery was, Shen Miao unfortunately did not have the mood to appreciate.

When this was said, Xie Jing Xing instead smiled slowly.

His lips hooked up in a smile but not a smile as he pinched Shen Miao’s chin towards him, “When you were thinking of ways to haggle over every ounce with me, when you are calculating on how to do business with me, when you borrow my hands to kill others, you were very capable. Why is it that now you only have this little capability? En?”

Shen Miao’s eyes felt somewhat sourish. She really hated Xie Jing Xing’s current way of doing things. She could not break free at all and hated that she was this reactive. She felt her view becoming misty and very uncomfortable.

Xie Jing Xing’s brows furrowed, “Not allowed to cry.”

Shen Miao’s tears were welling up but not falling and she only felt extremely shameful in her heart. She was one who had lived for two lifetimes but with just a few sentences from Xie Jing Xing, she already wanted to cry. What nonsense was this? However the grievances in her heart could not be alleviated. It was like internally she was entirely in chaos.

She was also unwilling to lose face and had no way to break free of the situation thus in a rush, Shen Miao glared at Xie Jing Xing and said angrily, “Xie Jing Xing, don’t be too much.”

“Xie Jing Xing?” At the other end of the underbrush, an exclamation was heard.

    • Also why was Pei Lang somewhat uncomfortable as if his real intention has been seen through while proposing? Did he rly propose to gain power like others? Was he also eying shen xin’s military power?

      I felt in this lifetime, he has been pretty decent until now, then why was he suddenly ashamed/embarrassed?

      He does have some feelings for SM but he himself cannot make the head or tail of it. But it’s not like him at all to propose maraage so suddenly specially when he knows FXY is the mastermind of this whole fiasco and would be watching everyone’s move like a hawk. How will he explain his actions in this scenario?

      • No. It’s exactly the opposite. The logical, most intelligent thing was to NOT do a thing, yet he did, what is completely incongruent and even OoC (not in a meta sense, I mean it in-story. It’s completely opposite from the way he usually is) for him.

        He’s the guy that is always rational, capable of seeing the big picture, and detached enough to be able to go for it. No matter moral or feelings, his or the others.

        And rationally speaking, there’s no reason for him to propose (and is actually the worst move for both of them), what leaves the question “then what did you do it for?”

        And thing is… He isn’t even ready to acknowledge his feelings, he probably knows they are there, but chooses to not poke them, because they make him uncomfortable, because he unconsciously knows that acknowledging and dealing with them will hurt and maybe even harm his opinion of himself.

        And as it’s such a delicate feeling, something so vulnerable, that he doesn’t want to acknowledge to even himself, how do you think he’d feel if he showed it to others? Especially *her*?

        It’s just like showing both your weak spot and that you’re not even able to face it.

        So when he says it’s like she’s seen through his real intentions, it’s literally this. She has seen through his feelings, because there’s just no possible way for it to be something rational or from the mind and not the heart.

        And that’s why she questions and walk him through the reason/mind side of things, he can’t answer, because there’s not one kind of answer made of of reason.
        Thus why he can’t answer.
        (And if it’s not miiind… It’s feelings)

        Think of those ppl that are pure mind/intellect, and when, suddenly they are confronted with feelings, and they start overcoming them and leaking/motivating their actions they bug.
        They just cannot understand/deal with it, keep denying it and go “error error”.

        That’s probably why PL is like that. He’s not used by having emotions take over his actions.
        He’s frantic, and probably likes/loves her to some great deal, since he isn’t thinking at all…

        Now that you mention it, love IS the primary way to get the idiot ball, isn’t it? :/

    I don’t think Pei Lang want to marry Shen Miao for her powerful family connections. The new SM seems to have impressed PL at every turn, be it at the tournament or forcing him in the path of Prince Ding. The admiration has somehow mutated to a somewhat reluctant affection towards her. Thats why I believe he proposed to her.

    And XJX, can you at least wait till our Empress retaliation? You gave her so many weapons, at least let her practice with it a bit… Always stealing our Empress Limelight, aren’t you??

    Finally shedding tears for that poor horse… Must be on its last breathe now considering how quick XJX arrived.

    And then she calls him not only a chess piece but basically a tool. Both by only being someone to use, and by almost endangering his value by being obtuse. To his face. After all, what else could he be worth for, esp without intelligence?

    Damn girl. That was a wrecking ball. I don’t even know why XJX would be mad with the guy.
    I mean, even with all the vinegar, the way our little empress was ruthless to PL he doesn’t even need to do anything, except have pity for the poor guy.

      After thinking about it in depth while posting I have reached the same conclusion, PL must like her a great deal, more than I thought he did, if the reason for the idiot ball is love. SM’s though, I wonder..

      I agree to basically everything, so I’ll only comment on the part I don’t.

      I’m not against kabedons per see, it’s the way they happen.
      Like here, he’s freaking immobilizing her, being somewhat of a brute, even sorta aggressive.
      This is a turn down. Thought it shows he’s truly mad at her, and that she crossed a line she shouldn’t have, and that’s probably because not only of the way she views marriage, but to how she’s treating her own self and her future in doing it.

      Now, kabedons could be good, like when a couple is flirting and they need ahem more privacy before going somewhere to get frisky.
      Now this could be hot, this could be awesome. o3o

      Sadly it doesn’t get done much, esp in Asian novels/dramas/etc I’d guess.
      Another reason would be for the guy to be protective and somewhat “whisk her away from the world”.
      And I have no problem with that.

      Now.. To do it so she can’t escape, not letting her move, or treating her in a demoralizing way… Yes.

      Thought I’m still sorta happy because here it means they are talking, and could solve some things but still… Even with him (or maybe exactly because he is) holding her she manages to not answer, rofl XD

    • I understand you. I agree that one shouldn’t force one’s will only because one is stronger.
      I would also lose interest in any man forcing me to do anything I don’t want to do.
      However the keypoint to me whether a male lead doing kabedon tolerable or not is exactly that one condition, which is the feeling of the other party. There are some circumstances where the women actually have the same desires but being hypocrite for some reason and just need a stimulant to open up herself and be brave enough to get her happiness.
      And in this case, XJX never meant to hurt nor force her anyway.
      He was only impulsively reacting to the way she treat her own self…
      He was furious listening how she is still so indifferent with her own wellbeing… despite now having so many people who care and love her dearly around…who would willingly do whatever it takes to help her.
      She is no longer surrounded by greedy foxes like 2nd and 3rd Shen families like before.
      Last but not least…apart of all those facts, XJX is atleast her ally and she knows she can ask her shadow guard CY to send news atleast to JiShuYu in the pawn shop.
      She has once hired that pawn shop to solve her problem, so why now she is being like this?!
      That’s why he is interogating her like that.
      Where has all her wits gone?
      Ji shu yu and gao yang might not think this is an important issue so that they delay the report in order not to disturb the original project of XJX.
      But if only SM has sent news to ask for help, I doubt that they would ignore it.
      JSY’s pawn shop is there for such business anyway.
      Human sometimes lose control of one’s emotion for an instance, that’s normal.
      Essential is that whether one still stop soon enough before crossing the line too far.
      And XJX is definitely still capable to stop when he has to.

      • It is nice that those people are willing to help her but actually marrying those people aren’t an option. If Shen Miao married any of them it would be prioritizing herself over the lives of others.

        The pawn shop is primarily for buying information and an indirect means of contacting XJX but XJX was already supposed to know about all that is happening. Since he has done nothing there is no point in contacting him. What SM doesn’t know is that SM’s idiot subordinates have been keeping the info from him. To SM if he cared then he would have taken action already like the other people he mentioned yet he did not.

        There is a difference between offering help when it is requested and helping without being requested. This was also a sort of test for XJX which he has failed or at least he is inferior to all those other people he is being jealous of.

        I was talking about her keeping everything by herself despite knowing that she at this present life has people staying by herself and would support her unconditionally.
        She is no longer all alone fighting against those evil people.
        Her family is there…
        And No, XJX knows nothing and she knew it, since she asked her secret guard CY about him and he told her that he is not in the capital now and that he doesn’t know where he is at the moment…but he offers her to inform the Rui Wangfu to send message, and she answered “No need.”
        So it’s clear that there is no reason to believe that XJX got informed by his subordinate about her.
        SM is not narcisistic enough to believe that XJX would order his men to pay attention to every details about her and order them to report immediately.
        And she is not in a position to expect anything from XJX at all. She knew it…

SM told him not to report the conversation she had with the monk which concerns all her secret about her past life and present. That’s not something you want people to know. That didn’t have anything to do with her being proposed.

        I don’t think SM expects XJX to come and save her since she thinks the relationship between them is just of allies but XJX doesn’t think that way since he gets upset when she didn’t ask him for help since he already viewed her as a significant other. I do, however, think SM even though not expecting help, wants the help and that’s why she feels conflicted. She wants the help but doesn’t feel the right to ask. Also in her mind, he’s someone who only help people to help himself but she has nothing that she can think of to offer him that he would want. She doesn’t know what he wants is her and for her to love him back. She just take all his advances as jokes and him being the frivolous guy that he is.

  44. That was total out of character from Pei Lang. Maybe being subdued by Shen miao twisted his character (secret Masochist?) And just like Pei Lang before XIe Jing Xin seems to be oblivious to the sourroundings once Shen Miao is involved. And the one person to hear his old identiy must be the princess since she was walking on hidden paths. Though it would have been more suprising if it would have been his ‘father’.

    On another note Shen miao is really ruthless to herself. I mean it is about the biggest thing in her life and all she thinks about is ‘it’s just a stranger who will sleep next to me so what?’ I can understand though after the experience from her first life I would probabaly be just as cynical. Perhaps the old princess can help our ‘cute’ couple

  47. There is a jealousy indeed but he has heard that SM rejected all the offer so I think those suitors are not the things that anger him.
    I think he is more furious for the fact that she is being too indifferent with her own happiness and wellbeing. She is still a little girl anyhow and so stubborn fighting all alone not even letting people around her who care about her to know and help.
    XJX might not realise it but he already had much concern for her and doesn’t like seeing her suffering any grievance.
    He has seen her burning the family altar and put her self in danger only to expose the family dispute although XJX could have helped her to flee from the guards easily at that time. He had once helped her before, so she should know that he would
    help if she asks.
    So he definitely can assume to what extent she might bet with her own wellbeing to protect her Shen family, and that annoys him very badly.
    He is just born with a silver spoon and has an arrogant character that makes him not able to express his feeling well.

      But who told her to be so stubborn not willing to ask CY to send request for help?
      He might not know where he is and those two young masters might be not attentive enough…but if she asks for it…I doubt that the, would hold the news from XJX and ignore her requesz for help.
