Chapter 46: Betting with Life

The words ‘now it’s my turn’ were said lightly by Shen Miao but had an inexplicable chill in them. As it the sound was from the highest of heavens and hit Cai Lin heavily.

Cold sweat that was formed on Cai Lin’s forehead rolled down as he stared at Shen Miao, who was in front of him.

Shen Miao took a few steps forward and bend down to pick the longbow from the ground. Everyone in the arena watched her every move as their eyes were reluctant to even turn away.

This was an unexpected scenario. One had originally thought that Shen Miao would have fainted due to the scare or would have forgotten about her appearance, but she did not do any of it. It was however Cai Lin who was soaking in cold sweat and cannot even shoot any of the three arrows properly.

After a brief silence, the audience below the stage started discussing.

Up on stage, Shen Miao passed the fruit to Cai Lin.

When Cai Lin’s hands took the fruit they were trembling as he asked, “Shen Miao, do you have knowledge of archery?”

“No knowledge.” Shen Miao slightly smiled as she looked at him, “Today is the first time I have touched a bow but since there are three arrows to shoot, if one does not understand during the first arrow, there is another arrow to always learn.”

Cai Lin shuddered in cold sweat and looked at Shen Miao incredulous, “Are you not speaking nonsense?”

  19. Lmao, this was certainly a build up chapter, but it was really satisfying to see everyone recognize her strengths. At least for the time being, they realize she’s not an idiot – soon enough, they’ll see her true worth.

    Ugh, the princes are so disgusting, I swear. Especially that Prince Yu. I can just tell he’s going to become a problem later on. FYX’s is also paying more attention to her…can’t wait until he realizes he loves her and tries to pursue her, only for her to shut him down. That will be so satisfying.

    And hmm, I wonder what XJX’s celebration is about? Maybe after he teaches his shu brothers a lesson, lol! Also, our little empress is such a boss, calmly dealing with this silly official in front of everyone and eloquently crushing him haha~

  48. All of them had the chance to think about the point where she would shoot at him a long time ago when the life or death agreement was made. Even if they thought she was a fool wouldn’t it be even scarier if the fool, being a fool, had picked up the arrows to shoot?
    Everyone seemed to think she should lower herself and humiliate herself in order to get out of the competition but did anyone ever wonder why she should do that since she did nothing to provoke it? Why should she be set up for humiliation? Did they all assume it was fair since she won one competition and they were eager to see the ‘fool’ become the ‘fool’ again? or else they would feel uneasy? I am not talking about Cai Lin here but of all the rest of the audience and their assumptions. I have not heard one person saying that it is shameful of Cai Lin to challenge someone he is obviously better than and a woman at that. That even if he wins, even if she bows out or is humiliated he has still made a fool of himself–there is really no win for him. That is what I would have expected to hear said by at least some of the people in the crowd. In these competitions is it normal for people to challenge people they know are far less skilled than they are? What would that prove? I assume they would challenge those close in skill in order to gain something in winning.
    Even with what he expected to happen, playing it out in front of parents and teachers would seem to throw a shadow on him as much as her.

Every day as Monday, Thursday or Saturday rolls around, I start getting antsy cause I know there’s a new update waiting and I just can’t! I am just so thankful to chubbycheeks for taking out her time to update this. You have my utmost gratitude. As for this chapter, boy I’m floored.

    Lol, my guess is Shen Miao does know how to shoot but she’ll intentionally miss with the first two arrows grazing Cai Lin in the process so that he is literally a snotty mess but then on the final one, she’ll hit the target, so then everyone is stumped. After that, everyone will realize she was just messing with him. Also I was just so satisfied with her remark at Cai Lin’s dad. What is an official to an empress after all?
