Daughter-in-Law of a Noble House: Intro

侯门新妇
Daughter-in-Law of a Noble House

By: Hai Qing Na Tian Er (海青拿天鹅)

A short post on my next translation project. There is only one synopsis for this novel and I will also leave some comments on it… 🙂

Summary from Baike

Translated summary…

There was chaos throughout all lands under Heavens, while warlords were vying for supremacy.

Fu Jin, the daughter of an exterminated noble clan, was forced to marry Wei Tan, an ambitious and formidable eldest son at the apex of his life.

This new daughter-in-law of the noble house received the solicitude of the officials and overturned the internal strife. In times of chaos, displacement and the subjugation of prominent clans, as a married woman one only wished to survive, conduct business, manage the affairs of the household and live one’s life in peace.

Amidst the chaotic war, she watched the changes in the Imperial court and the battle for power. One exquisite heart had set in motion thousands of strategies and success was but a leap!

Yet, one was not able to scheme beyond his ten years’ plan of ‘giving a taste of one’s own medicine’.

The eyes of the fourteen year old Wei Tan, who had arrived at the Imperial Guards, caught sight of Fu Jin. His emotions stirred when they encountered each other in the Southern market. He noticed her eyes would dart to the right when she was calculating and knew that she had a penchant for haggling prices. He believed the ‘exorbitant price’ he had paid for the plum flower bottle in her hands would certainly attract the beauty’s attention. Little did he expect that she would only remember the hundred and fifty coins. She had paid no attention to the build or stature of the person who had paid.

Ten years later, what was gratifying was that the affairs of the world were ever changing. In the end, after many twists and turns, she actually became his Furen.

The main reason why I have finally picked this novel to translate is that it is not about Rebirth/Transmigration/Reincarnation. There are just too many of those out there and no matter how good they are, I am getting a little tired of them. I choose to believe that there were smart and strong women in the past who were far ahead of their peers or society.

Like the previous novels I have picked, Fu Jin aka the Female Lead, has a strong character. However, in this novel, her strength is more internalised than others. (I hope you understand what I mean… lol). Anyone else experiencing what she did would most likely roll over and die. She did not depend on others even though on the surface, it seemed like she did. Her entire family was executed and she escaped because her father had sent her to the Empress Dowager. But after the Empress Dowager died, the Emperor and the Empress married her off to a fool (mentally challenged?). In the midst of chaotic political scenario, her Father-in-law married her off the Grand Commandant’s son and this is where the novel starts off.

Another thing I love about this novel is Wei Tan aka the Male Lead. Honestly, I feel that he is better than XJX because he always steps back and lets her make her decisions (to choose him or her ex, to leave the family or not, etc.). He also knows her from way before and that she has changed because of her circumstances. However, he still loves the girl she was previously and the woman she has become. He is like those second leads from all the dramas and novels that we (specifically me) fall for knowing that they would never get the FL in the end. Don’t worry, this novel will have a happy ending. 😀

This time, there will be 3 editors on board at the beginning to help straighten up my translation. The language used is not as flowery as previous ones but the novel is written from a first person perspective and the words used are from a different dynasty/period compared to my previous projects. So, I will get more confused than ever on the grammar and my consistency on all the ministers’ rankings will go down the drain… LOL… Let’s welcome @Kiskaiya @Larkspur @Halley

Back to me again… I am still translating the first few chapters at the moment and my speed is like a tortoise due to work (still flying around, new projects, shitssssss to clear…). Please bear with me!!!

    • Ohhhh thank god, a story that’s not reincarnation or transmigration. Your right there’s a ton of em some pretty good ones but it’s getting tiring and hard to find something new. It would be nice to read a story where they figure out and strive for something without a rebirth and a second chance to fix things. I look forward to this story whenever you get chapters out!

  3. It really reminds me of a drama called: Empress of the Ming: Legend of Sun Ruowei
but I believe the ending is not very satisfactory in this drama…

  4. This looks like fun! I agree that sometimes the everyday fabric of life can be interesting even if a main character doesn’t know things from a previous life. I’m especially intrigued since you mention she was married – twice?

  6. Finally you’re back!! Cant wait for anther exciting journey! Thank you Zaza for giving us top notch stories to read, really really appreciate it. Thank you also for not choosing transmigration/rebirth stroy this time around- I personally find that genre is too saturated right now with mediocre storyline to say the least.

    • So excited for the new novel. Strong female lead doesnt have to good in martial art, scheme and politics. Being a woman with patient, calm through every obstacle, and virtous are strong women in my opinion.

  12. Yaay!!! New book to look forward to. I love strong female leads. I agree it would be nice to read about an amazing lead that doesn’t have knowledge of events to happen. Personally not against the reincarnation stories tho if it written well.

  13. I’m looking forward to it!!!

Yeah, there are way too many reincarnation/transmigration story. It would be nice to read about a strong female lead who didn’t need to go through all that but still excelled in her own way.

  14. Thank you so much for taking on another project! I honestly love the novels you choose to translate with women I can actually look up to, compared to the female leads who are just bloodthirsty, arrogant, and seem to have nothing going for them other than being beautiful and having OP cheats… And the male leads are even more one-dimensional. Sorry about the random rant, just wanted to say that I really enjoyed reading about Shen Miao and I’m really, really excited for your next project, it sounds amazing!

  22. Really awesome story, I legitimately had to go back to check tags and summary because I was so engrossed in the relationships I thought if it had swinging drama or angst XD XD

Jokes apart, the story is really awesome & well-written, with “show, not tell”. Wei Tan is yet to given screentime. Our dear FL, Fu Jin is a rare calm protagonist who is showing the maturity a child would acquire in such war-torn times.
    Hope you continue the story!
