Chapter 170: Wrath (Part 1)

Early on the next day, Shen Miao entered the Palace.

Luo Xue Yan and Shen Xin were worried about her and let her bring a number of guards. But the guards of the Shen residence could not follow Shen Miao constantly and once they reached the Palace gates, they had to wait outside.

Before Shen Miao’s departure, she had put on all the different jewellery that Xie Jing Xing gave. Everything that could be worn were worn. Towards the Imperial Palace of Ming Qi, she could not guarantee that it as the most malicious place and only feared that accidents would happen thus she made preparations.

Once she reached the Palace Gates, Gu Yu and the rest waiting outside with the guards while Shen Miao was led into Kun Ning Palace by the palace maid. Along the journey, the palace maid felt somewhat strange. The journey from the Palace Gates to Kun Ning Palace was not considered easy as one had to walk through a number of long corridors and a few gardens but Shen Miao walked familiarly. Even along those old and loose steps the palace maids need not need to warn her and she would skip the steps accordingly. The palace maid was suspicious in her heart. Could it be that Shen Miao came to Kun Ning Palace once and remembered it so well that not one mistake was made?

One would not expect that this Kun Ning Palace was the place that Shen Miao stayed in her past lifetime that every single grass and wood were all remembered. Thus facing all the Imperial furnishing and delicate displays, she would turn a blind eye to it and if one looked carefully, there was a flash of aversion in Shen Miao’s eyes.

These people did not know.

Upon reaching Kun Ning Palace, the servant was styling the Empress’s hair and Shen Miao had to wait for quite a while before the Empress invite her in.

Today Consort Dong Shu did not come over and the Empress was the only mistress. She wore a somewhat formal robes with the nine Phoenixes hairpins and put a heavy makeup, to display a oppressive feeling.

Shen Miao took a glance and understood in her heart.

This was treating her as a little girl who had not seen the world and wanted to use the Imperial family’s prestige to scare her? Force her to relent voluntarily? No wonder Luo Xue Yan was purposely dispensed. Shen Miao went up accordingly and the Empress held Shen Miao’s hand. One did not know where one had found such a rare jade material, so transparent and exceptionally smooth. Just as she was about to praise a few sentence, she heard Shen Miao speaking with a smile, “Replying to Your Ladyship, this official’s daughter’s necklace and earrings also looks good.”

The Empress was dazed before seriously looking at it and the corner of her mouth could not help but jerk after looking at it. Cat eye hairpin matching with pearl earrings, pearl earrings with amber necklace, and needless to say all the other small jewelry. Each of them were pervious jewellery with exquisite craftsmanship but why did one brainlessly wear all of them? The Empress suddenly did not want to praise Shen Miao’s jewelry and even lost interest in that bracelet. There was some despise in her heart as in the beginning everyone said that the Young Lady of the Shen family was a idiot that loves gold but afterwards there was a change. From today appearance, there was no difference from previous. Thinking of marrying Shen Miao to the Crown Prince, the Empress’s heart was not happy. If it was for the sake of giving the Shen family’s military power to the Crown Prince, the Empress was not willing to let such a coarse female marry into the Eastern Palace.

The Empress released Shen Miao’s hand, “Today BenGong only wanted to talk to you.” She sighed, “That day one had mentioned it with your Mother that you do not have any engagement and at the right age. Shen Miao lowered her head without speaking.

Shen Miao sneered in her heart but she had a smile on as she replied, “Your Ladyship live well and it is impressive.”

“Marrying into the Imperial family would allow the powerful one protect and dote. Every female would be able to live well and impressively. BenGong life is indeed good. If you have this kind of good luck, do you want to live impressively?”

These words had the intention to tempt. Shen Miao’s lips slightly rose but her words were instead humble and fearful as she knelt down, “This official’s daughter is currently living very well and dare not to look at other things and don’t even dare to compare with Your Ladyship. May Your Ladyship spare this official’s daughter a life.”

The Empress was stunned. She did not expect that Shen Miao would have such a reaction. There were numerous of people under Heavens that wanted to climb to higher branches thus the Empress knew that as long as it was normal females, there would be a little vanity and by using herself as a lure, it would be easy to convince Shen Miao due to her young age and one did not fear she would not be tempted. As long as Shen Miao loosen a bit and follow her words, then the Imperial family would be justified to push the marriage to the Shen family. Since one wanted to be a bandit, one had to conceal some parts of it.

Who knew that Shen Miao would have this kind of reaction? Not tempted, no hesitation and instead fearful?

The Empress did not feel good. Could it be that being an Empress was such a scary thing? Or is it that the Di born Young Lady of the Shen family had a courage of a mouse or was as stupid as a cow and could not understand her subtle hint and thought that calamity was approaching?

One could not make mud rise up and climb the wall (aka useless as mud).

In the remaining of the time, no matter how tactful the Empress spoke or how hash or gentle, Shen Miao still had a humble and fearful appearance on. It was because of this appearance, her mouth was very tight and one was unable to get a single word out of her. At the end the Empress was somewhat angry and let Shen Miao go back in annoyance. She only thought that since this matter could not be targeted from Shen Miao then one had to discuss new approaches with Emperor Wen Hui.

Because the Empress’s attitude was not of satisfaction when she let Shen Miao leave, the palace maids that was bringing her also did not care much of Shen Miao and just give Shen Miao to a young eunuch who was passing by to bring Shen Miao out of the Palace.

The young eunuch naturally complied.

The young eunuch brought Shen Miao towards the outer Palace and took a few turns. There are a lot of palaces in the Palace and other than the few palace that was used by the consorts, most of it were the eunuch and palace maids rooms. This young eunuch brought Shen Miao to a walk on the secluded area and after turning into a garden, one was facing an neglected garden, Shen Miao stopped and said, “This is not the direction to leave the Palace. Where are you bringing me to?” Her hands moved towards her bracelet. No one was more familiar than her on Ming Qi’s palace and halls as she knew which direction to escape was the most advantages to her.

That young eunuch was startled and quickly whispered, “Gentleman Pei wants to see Young Lady.”

Pei Lang? Shen Miao frowned slightly.

After thinking for a moment, Shen Miao still followed the young eunuch. Pei Lang had not written a letter to her for a long time and Shen Miao still thought that Pei Lang was discovered by Fu Xiu Yi. However when she send Mo Qing to inquire, he seemed to see Pei Lang in the residence of Prince Ding and he seemed to be safe and sound. If Fu Xiu Yi were to be suspicious of Pei Lang, he would definitely not let Pei Lang be that unrestrained.

If Pei Lang look for her then there must be something important.

There were many coincidences in the world. What Shen Miao did not know was that the Imperial family had the intention to bestow a marriage, implicating a group of people. Shen Xin, Luo Xue Yan and Shen Qiu were family and would run nonstop with regards to the matter but a few other people also came forward afterwards. For example, Luo Ling expressing his sincere heart, Su Ming Feng mistaken marriage and Feng Zi Xian’s reaching out to help.

There were thousands of strands of connection in the world and those connections were as thin as the sparkling and translucent thread that spiders spit out in each respective position. When it criss-cross, it would form a thin and dense network of knots that would become a strange and unexplainable coincidence.

Princess Rong Xin entered the Palace.

Her health had alway not been good and had became thinner in the recent years. She would only enter the Palace in a handful of days in a year and seemed to be somewhat eager today. The palace maid wanted to report it but Princess Rong Xing waved her hands, “BenGong did not have and invitation and just wanted to discuss about some matters with Imperial Older Brother so there is no need to report it.”

How would the guards at the Palace Gates dare to stop? Even though Princess Rong Xing did not show up often, she was after all the daughter that the late Emperor doted the most and had a strong temperament. If one made her anger, there would not be good days ahead thus she was immediately let go.

The palace maid wanted to look for a sedan for Princess Rong Xin but was rejected by Princess Rong Xin, “It is not convenient for the sedan when using small routes. Just follow BenGong to walk slowly.”

Princess Rong Xin’s heart was anxious. She did not ask about matters of the cost and would be in her Princess residence all day. If she did not passed by the courtyard and heard that the servants speaking about Shen Miao’s matter, she would not know that the Imperial family had the intention to marry Shen Miao to the Crown Princess. Not to mention about Xie Jing Xing, Princess Rong Xing would still want to protect Shen Miao. Princess Rong Xin herself appreciated Shen Miao and as a person of the Imperial family, Princess Rong Xin knew that for the female who married in, it looks glamorous on the outside but it was not necessarily happy. Moreover Shen Miao was not a female who was keen in wealth and glory so there was no need for such things for her. If one were to married into the Eastern Palace, Shen Miao would not be happy for her entire life.

Princess Rong Xin was in a rush to look for Emperor Wen Hui, hoping that she was able to change her Imperial Older Brother’s mind. Thus she headed towards a small route.

Shen Miao had reached a remote pavilion.

That pavilion was nestled in the middle of the words with a long corridor leaning against it. There were several rooms along the corridor which made it convenient to hid. Pei Lang walked out from that room.

The young eunuch stood outside to keep a lookout for both of them. Shen Miao nodded her head towards Pei Lang as a greeting and asked, “Gentleman Pei, is there any urgent matter to be discussed here?”

“Prince Ding had seal the residence, thus one is unable to send you a letter.” Pei Lang said, “The idea of the Crown Prince marrying you was brought up by Prince Ding.”

Shen Miao’s brow raised and when Pei Lang saw that she was not surprised, he asked, “You knew?”

“Guess that it was his handiwork.” Shen Miao said blandly, “With the Crown Prince’s brains, how would he think of me without any rhyme or reason.”

Pei Lang had some doubts about Shen Miao’s tone of voice as it seemed like she was very familiar with the Crown Prince and Fu Xiu Yi. But Shen Miao was an unmarried female who would not have any opportunities for interaction with the Princes so how would she be able to understand the Princes’ personalities? One fear that even Shen Xin was necessarily as familiar as Shen Miao.

This neglected garden once had a ghostly encounter thus almost no one came here, thus Pei Lang did not worry about people passing by. He said frowningly, “What are you planning to do with the matter of marriage?”

Shen Miao was somewhat surprised. Pei Lang had always been a person who would only analyse the pros and cons about a matter without personal feelings thus it would be rare for him to ask about her marriage matter. After all how she view this marriage matter was irrelevant to the overall situation.

Shen Miao said, “Let nature take it’s course.”

“You cannot marry the Crown Prince.” Pei Lang said.

    What’s so good about becoming an empress anyway??? She was the empress in tge past life and look what happened and even if SM wanted to be empress again all she has to do is marry XJX hehe. I read a spoiler somewhere that XJX becomes the emperor of MQ.

  7. I have always been hesitant about how to feel about PL, in the other life of SM she never thought about helping her, whereas now she seems to really worry about her …. 😒😒😒

    • In the last life, Fu Xiu Yi was the one that gave Pei Lang everything, thus buying his loyalty. However, in this life, Shen Miao got to him first and provided him with the means to power. Pei Lang is a stubbornly loyal person to his benefactor, it’s just that in this life, that benefactor was changed…

      • I think it’s more than that… remember? Pei Lag was her teacher. In both lives. As such, he does have an inkling to who she is. Even moreso with his intelligence and observational skills.

        Previous life she was naive, inconsequent, spoiled and was always pushing and straining things too far. In a way, she was even selfish, she put in her mind that it had to be FXY and dragged her whole family into it against their better judgement. And what for? For a puppy and foolish love/infatuation if not outright obsession. And to what end? Well, we see how this went…

        Now, this life? He was a teached young girls. And after she went back to school after some incident at home she what? revealed herself? how can someone change so? and most of all, she became an enigma.
        Suddenly she was someone else, with a behaviour that not only doesn’t match her age, but with a mind that if not surpasses than rivals his own, with ideas very much on the same line as his (remember school comptetition arc?), and schemes that not only controls/outplays him but that also put her in the same lv as FXY, whom he has already recognized as throne-..erm, if not worthy than let’s say “throne-capable” material.

        She is now, a puzzle, an enigma, with a larger than life view and personality, that despite the odds is completely non-matching with what she should be. A brilliant mind, playing a game most wouldn’t dare and more capable than the few that would.

        So, in a way, he’s both mentally repulsed and attracted to her, and both curious and interested in her. The fact that she is unique and that’d it’d be a pity to lose such an interesting character makes some sort of attachment. And that she’s brilliant makes for admiration.

        And all of that together is, a very, very easy way to fall for one person, even one of the recipies for love, or at least attraction that there is.

        So, my guess is, it’s not only that of which you are speaking, though that does certainly factor in. But it sorta factors in in a mental way (well, and practical too since she holds his sister), he feel loyal to her because of his values, the same way he sorta wishes he didn’t have to so he could follow FXY freely, also because of his values…

        But this? No. This certainly is some kind of emotional attachment. But to what degree and how conscious he is about it…
        That we have yet to see.

  12. So much drama, I wish to binge read until the drama finished. About the wrath.(title) . Is for XJX or for Princesses Rong Xie?? I hope is XJX wrath to Gao Yang and people he close because of not telling him anything at all..
    And I think GY act like that because he don’t want SM to marry XJX..

  14. Hmm, I dislike FXY with the passion of a million fiercely burning suns but I got to admit that I respect the guy’s ability to plan. These brothers can only come up with petty tricks but not once did any of them take into account their opponents. None of them realised that the crown Prince, with his personality would not take the initiative. So who’s pushing him from behind and why? Then if such a great opportunity comes to embroil your opponent in trouble why would your opponent not also take the initiative to make use of this opportunity as well? Not to mention that the emperor has eaten more salt than they have eaten rice so will he really allow their plots to destabilise the courts? And crown Prince sama if you know FXY is also aiming for the throne then please understand that he will only pass you a weak piece or a false strong piece.
    None of the other princes are taking stock of the full picture like that hated Prince and for that reason alone I respect FXY. If only he wasn’t such an ass. He repays the loyalty of his officials with glory then why couldn’t he do the same for his empress. Even when she was a “foolish” woman she had a strong heart and endured bitterness no normal woman would just for him. I guess he just had bad taste. That mei furen or whatever that can only enjoy the final rewards but not the hardship. I really hope that when FXY dies Mei whatever is the one to p push him to his final demise. Let him descend to hell unwilling and despairing.
    Ahem. Yeah, he rubs me the wrong way. This sort of white eyed wolf that not only betrays a girl’s heart while pretending to love her but also doesn’t understand the matter of repaying grace with gratitude to the point he couldn’t even keep her children alive… so frustrating. Sorry for the rant as a character FXY is developed well enough for me to truly loathe him such that just thinking about him makes me rage, kudos to the author.

      Yes. 100x yes.
      The other princes think they are playing the game, and that they are oh-so-smart about it. That they are killing two bird with one stone (or rather three eagles with one arrow XD), but their schemes are so shallow and they so fail to see the picture and how you’ve said that if they can see it/do it, then what’s keeping the others from doing the same? that it makes their schemes look like child’s play, especially compared to FXY’s.

      FXY’s plan of pushing SM to the crown prince? now that’s a perfect, strategy book brilliant lv of “how we should do it”. The prince’s ploy are just children playing with it, while failing to see its implications, thinking they are adults for it.

      All the while, FXY, the true adult is laughing, because children will be children, and they are acting exactly as he hoped they would, and everything is going according to plan. It’s all so obvious, but the children don’t actually know what they are doing, can’t see what is happening, and will be sooo surprised when things don’t go as they thought it would. So, so naïve.

      And that’s why they freaking deserve to be curbstomped by FXY. I mean, they had to ally themselves with other princes, and even if their leader got the throne, they’d spen’t years paranoid thinking they’d be betrayed so they should get rid of ea other first.
      FXY knows this from the beginning, so chose to play alone, and is going for the sweep. And he’ll manage to sweep all of them alone, because that is how capable he is.

      But contrary to you, I don’t admire him for it.
      I just disdain him even more so.
      With all that intelligence, and he couldn’t even give credit where it was due, and didn’t give SM value, where all he got was because of her. the least he could do was treat her well, and poor SM, the way she was in the past life she wouldn’t even ask for much.
      But even that little he failed to give her, which only actually shows how much incapable and inept he is at it.

      I wish in his past life he lived the rest of his life hollowly. There was one person who truly loved him, and did everything for him. That one he left her dry, used her to the bone, then threw away. the others partly loved him/married him for his position, for his power.
      To live the rest of his life in a lie, in such a shallow love filled with self-interest, with kids that only saw him and their brothers as in the way to the throne, to live in paranoia till one day he gets so weak that his children will eat him alive, raise the country to the ground and undo all he worked so hard to have/do…

      Yes. that is what I wish for him in the past life. No. His is story is far from over even if SM’s was.
      Now in this life…. *looks to the princes* *sighes*
      Let’s say this dinasty is over and done.
      they need better ppl for it.

    • I agree with your thinking with exception of one thing. According to the previous chapter, they realized FXY’s ambitions after the Third Shen Family incident. They calculated that it was FXY who probably came up with the idea. Where they erred is they think they are smarter than FXY.

Now that they know he’s aiming for the throne they’re still not asking why he would give such a great idea to the crown Prince his competition? Even this one thought that FXY is not as simple as he looks is disregarded quickly. They say that he does not have the capability but Shen Wan was known to be capable and if insiders did not betray them no one would have known he had a relationship with FXY. So in this sort if situation instead of brushing off the brother who had hidden himself so deeply the next question skills have been: He had this one chess piece so perfectly hidden away, why? How? What other chess pieces had he hidden?
        No enemy who hides themselves this deeply is stupid or incapable, and enemy who is hidden in the dark trailing the you who is in the light is harmless.

    • Well, FXY’s character is someone who would discard anyone that will threaten him. Aside from disdaining jiao jiao from being “foolish”, i think the reason he treated her badly was more because he feels threatened by her family. If SM was a favored empress, she would have more political power and with the help of shen xin’s military power, its a possibility (at least in fxy eyes) that sm’s child will overthrow him. Then, sm’s family will make the child their puppet. Ofc, knowing SM family’s personality, this is actually impossible. However, its a nature of FXY/emperors to be suspicious of families with too much power, so he deposed SM to be on the safe side. In the end, i doubt he really loves mei furen but rather, she’s just another tool to get rid of SM. He’ll probably dispose mei furen as well id she becomes too ambitious.

      I really really hate FXY as well, but if we look at it from this perspective, his treatment of jiao jiao would “make sense”. Im not condoning it in any way, (I HATE HIM) im just saying that it goes along with his rotten character.

      • Hmm, you answered a question I had (why would FXY treat SM the way he had). I had not thought of it from this perspective. But I think even these two reasons don’t fully explain everything. I mean, SM being foolish at the start probably brought his disdain and maybe that was why he was more willing to destroy her. But, a woman who happily offers herself up as a hostage for five years under what everyone knew would be a humiliating and hostile situation is really not a woman who will betray you. Not to mention that he could simply have demanded back the military talisman & left them powerless. In the first world there was no Luo military as backup, the only heir had been killed, the furen was dead and SX had been humiliated. Taking back the military talisman would have been more than enough.
        According to what we’re reading now apart from their strong military power the Shen family does not have much else. If they did now that the imperial family is trying to snatch their daughter for marriage there would be people coming up to support them. Not to mention the women can snob Luo Xue Yan precisely because the Shen family is isolated. So were they really a threat in the first life? Doubt it. FXY was brilliant till he became emperor then he became stupider? I mean he already had to ransom his empress to get military backing from a semi-hostile “ally” nation and yet he still wanted to destroy all the families that held his military might when none of those families opposed him? SM as long as he treated her decently would have ensured that SX remained loyal. In the end with SX’s only descendant a prince the military tally would return to FXY. This son of his has no reason to rebel if he respects his father and is made the crown prince as should have been his right from birth. Additionally hadn’t SM’s son already been deposed as crown prince because of his too gentle personality? He’d been deposed and there was still no sign of a rebellion so what was FXY trying to prove? He systematically destroyed all those people with any substance by his side. SM got the worst and most humiliating of it especially because she was so loyal to him but all the people with character were killed off. Only empty shelled bootlickers were left. Suspicion and paranoia are one thing, destroying all the pillars of your house because you’re afraid one might decide to fall and crush you is another thing.
        Pei Lang darling, FXY can think like an emperor but he cannot think like a leader.

      • More like his pride was hurt maybe? I mean in early years people ridiculed him for having a wife like Shen Miao and he is a person who holds grudges. Then there is that power throw but it doesn’t make sense cuz by the time Shen Miao and Mei furen started fighting each other, Shen Miao’s family was already in tatters with Shen Qiu and Luo Xue Yan dead. Shen Xin was in a slump. What kind of threat was he even expecting such a broken family to pose? So, I think it was more like his ego. Knowing him, he probably isn’t a total sucker for beauty considering Shen Miao is also a delicate beauty. Mei furen’s someone who is well suited in dirty mental tactics like Chen Rou Qiu, she probably played hard to get for a while, inciting Fu Xiu Yi’s interest and then after a lot of drama finally gave in to him, making him feel like he has tamed an unattainable woman, stroking his ego. This is something she is very likely to do given her seductive personality mentioned before.   27. FXY probably just verified that Pai Lang is connected to his arch enemy. I mean, seriously, he trusts no-one, and the entire mansion is in lock-down because he strongly suspects that there’s a spy in his ranks.
    It’s naive of Pei Lang to think that he can just meet up with her in a clearly planned meeting involving the help of other people, no matter where. That won’t fly. It’s one thing if you meet someone “by accident”, and another entirely when the mere mention of a name makes people deviate from their normal route to meet up. FXY isn’t stupid. I fully expect him to hear of this sooner or later.

    …that said, why did she even follow that eunuch. Would have been the perfect trap. PL was her old teacher, after all, so someone using his name to lure her into an abandoned area isn’t exactly unlikely. That was a dangerous gamble you took there, empress. No proof, just a name, right smack dab in the middle of enemy territory during a dangerous situation. How… brave.

  29. So is this what was mentioned as “ruining her reputation”? Playing a fearful cat and at the same time display a vulgar image (well no gold but still laden with expensive jewelry). At the least it seems to have worked with the empress who seems to be blind to the dangers in the palace (or her husband is not the same schemer as his 9th son) I am looking forward to what Pei Lang has to say. I mean Shen Miao herself knows what would happen if she marries into the palace so let’s hear his opinion too. It can’t be a marriage proposal that would send his ‘master’ over the edge. And I never thought that the princess would also try to interfere. Perhaps she has a hunch that XJX is still alive and wants to confirm it (and then possibly matchmake). And I am waiting to see all the hidden weapons in action 😉
