Chapter 105: Pay With One’s Life For Murder (Part 1)

In front of the stone table at the Western courtyard of the Shen residence, Shen Miao was playing chess with Shen Qiu.

It was rare that Shen Qiu need not practise swordplay today and knowing that Shen Miao’s chess skills had improved by leaps and bounds, Shen Qiu has long rolled up his sleeves to win one round from Shen Miao. But currently the outcome of the game was not according to one’s wishes.

Shen Miao placed a black piece down and Shen Qiu previously oppressing white pieces were now surrounded by black pieces, unable to get out. Shen Qiu looked for a long time before asking Shen Miao, “Younger Sister, are not this the moves that I used in the first game?”

He felt that the moves on chessboard were very familiar when he saw them. The more he looked, the more surprised he was, as each steps that Shen Miao took were exactly like the moves he made in the first game. It was just that Shen Miao was able to play them better and at least in this game, the route she used was very convenient and filled with ferociousness.

“What?” Shen Qiu frowned as the chess piece fell and spin before finally falling onto the ground.

Shen Miao bent over to pick the chess piece up before she looked at the maid and asked warmly, “Who did he kill?”

In the prison of the Administrator of the Capital, Shen Yuan was locked up in the innermost cell, and his hands and clothes were stained with so much blood that they were shockingly red. Moreover there were also some bruises on his face.

He already felt humiliated regarding the matter of the Shen family’s banquet, but because he did not regain consciousness at that time, he could only tolerate it. Now the entire Ding capital’s people knew that he was to marry Jing Chu Chu but she made him wear a green hat. Everyone in the tavern seemed to also be pointing at him thus Shen Yuan was unable to control his wrath.

One did not know where Jing Chu Chu was brought to, but since she was the root cause of this matter, her fate would not be easy.

It just that… Shen Yuan still find it somewhat strange. How would the people in the tavern recognise Jing Chu Chu and him? Why would Jing Chu Chu pick that particular room to commit adultery. He faintly felt that something was wrong but he quickly shook his head. That place was the location where he would meet up with Fu Xiu Yi’s people. Other than Fu Xiu Yi’s people, no one else would know.

Shen Yuan though deeply. Fu Xiu Yi’s people would have reached the tavern and one fear that they were already aware of the matter.

At this moment, he had completely calmed down and those panicked emotions vanished, the bloodstains and the dark cell no longer shook him.

At this moment, one saw a warden walking over and stopped in front of his cell. Shen Yuan looked up and called out surprised, “Dong Hao!”

Jing Chu Chu called out miserably but how would the surrounding people tolerate her resistance. The Sun family people pulled Jing Chu Chu over, who was tied up like a pig, and gave her tens of slaps to her face. Jing Chu Chu fainted on the spot.

“You all better not bully intolerably!” Jing Guan Shen and the Jing family’s husband and wife rushed out and were furious at the scene. Sun Tian Zheng only had one son and once Sun Cai Nan was dead, even if the fish dies or the net splits, Sun Tian Zheng would not let him live well. Now it seemed that even if Shen Yuan died, it would not be able to quell the Sun family’s anger.

When Shen Qiu returned to the Western courtyard, he wiped his sweat and complained to Shen Miao, “The Sun family is just too rude. They almost smashed the main doors. My soldiers could not even stop them.”

    I highly doubt his highness is going to save him, To him, people are easily disposed of.
    I wonder if SM will go see SY before they kill him off though. After all, she did that with his sister.
    Slowly but surely these money-sucking family members are being dealt with. I wonder if the Shu daughter will be next because she seems quite calculating… but then again, SM hasn’t hit the 3rd household yet so it may be them next.
    The only weak point I see in the 3rd house is the fact that there’s no son… so maybe a women to create conflict?
    We haven’t got back to the brothel girl, her guard and the sighting of her teacher either. If I recall correctly, SM did say her teacher was one of the people who was under her ex right?

      • True! Since the person he works for likes to low-key get rid of pawns, the duty of getting rid of SY might fall on FXY. Which I guess I wouldn’t mind as well considering the fact that there would only be two options. The ones he offered his sister. It would be a fitting end to die by either being forced to or eating poison or whatever he tried to feed her when she was in jail. XD

  21. Thanks for the hard work of both translator and editor! The fast update speed is really satisfying. *brings popcorn* time for the tragicomic play to start again.

    Editorial question: I know that Shen Qiu and Shen Miao is playing a board game with black and white coloured pieces, but if they’re competing for areas and playing encirclement, that sounds a lot more like weiqi/go/baduk than chess. Just thought that the name of the game should be changed if that’s the case (and maybe a footnote added about the game for readers unfamiliar with it, if you have the time).

    So, the curtain rises and we are treated to the second act of Shen Yuan’s Fall.

    I find it hilarious that Shen Yuan really had no idea who Jing Chu Chu was cuckolding him with. What, you thought she just fell to the first handsome face she saw in a crowd? No worries! That wife-to-be of yours has expensive tastes and ambition! She is not _that_ easy to catch. She can’t be satisfied marrying into a family that is equal to her own, or even only slightly better–she wants to latch on to the shiniest family she can find, the better to ply her with jewels all her life! “Vaulting ambition, which overleaps itself” indeed. Now, in his cold jail cell, Shen Yuan finds out just how deep the shit hole he’d found himself in actually is.

    If the Jing family is smart, they’d have taken all their belongings and get the hell out of dodge first thing in the morning. After all, they’re still at ‘inconvenienced bystander’ position at this point, and it’s more of a fight between the Second Shen Household and the Minister Sun’s Residence.

    Yet like the pig following the trail of food into a boiling cauldron, we can see that their greed overrides their good sense (that is, if they even have any in the first place). They’re still irrationally holding on to the prospect of a marriage between Chu Chu and Shen Yuan, as if he wouldn’t find someone to kill her faster than he’d marry her. Come, my little piggies! Keep chasing the nonexistent feast! I’m waiting for all of you to metaphorically boil with a grin on my face. Seriously, the downfall of such a petty, troublesome and hypocritical family is something I’m rooting for just as much as I’m waiting for the fall of the entire Second Shen Household.

      • But even if that’s the case, at that point, she’d taken whatever it is that she can take from the First Shen Household, isn’t it? That she’d gained whatever advantage she can from marrying so high up for her family and had milked it for what it’s worth. She’s already married in for some time, after all. Right now, she hadn’t received the prize (marriage) yet, and so her greed compels her to stay…

      In terms of the word chess, it does not only refer to the English Chess. The word Qi 棋 is translated to chess but there are many different form of chess games in China, including WeiQi, XiangXi. The novel only indicated it as Qi so I translated it as chess 😀 (would have put WeiQi if they indicated that)

      • Ah, it’s the inherent vagueness of the original description.

        I’d argue that from the descriptions of the game so far, it has far more in common with go than chess, but I guess this is the sort of situation where an official translator would just go ahead and email the writer to ask for clarification. Not sure how possible that is.

    I’m thinking defyin the emperor’s order, with the personality of SX and LY couple, must be so bad an order.
    That time its really bad to defy an edict. I wonder if SX has any good friends that could save/speak for him at least to keep their lives.
    This next problem, I wonder how will SM make a turn around from this. I’m guessin last life they died because of this?

    Not even god can save Shen Miao’s enemies. Shen Yuan getting his just end is oh so satisfying. The big reveal of the victim is such a shock to him and a pleasant feeling for us readers.
