Chapter 104: Homicide (Part 1)

Finally the Jing family came down to the Ding capital after a few days.

As a small family from SuZhou, the Jing family had perfectly learned the villains’ mouth. After the Jing family’s husband and wife were aware of Jing Chu Chu’s and Shen Yuan’s matter, they first cried in anguish of their daughter’s bitter life before making a ruckus and threatened to report to the authorities for Shen Yuan to provide an answer, and they even did not agree to an engagement. On the surface it was as such but everyone was well aware that the Jing family’s husband and wife had gotten an advantage, and demonstrated their cleverness as they wanted to show that Shen Yuan married Jing Chu Chu willingly.

If one were not a family, one would not enter the family household. Old Shen Furen was unreasonable for so many years in the residence, and her family’s rampant overbearingness was exactly the same as hers. After a few moments of contesting, she was actually on the disadvantageous position, and had to agree to bringing Jing Chu Chu into the family with a palanquin with eight carriers during the wedding, and had to compensate with a large sum of dowry.

Old Shen Furen was like having to eat a bitter gourd and be unable to speak about the bitterness, and every day she had to look at the Jing family’s husband’s and wife’s faces. This made her so angry that her eyes and mouth twitched, almost leading to a stroke. In a burst of anger, she hid herself in Rong Jing Tang and did not see anyone.

The Jing family took the casual action for a warrant to give commands, thus in a few days’ time all the commoners in the Ding capital knew that Shen Yuan would be marrying Jing Chu Chu from SuZhou. The commoners were not aware of the secrets during the family banquet in the Shen residence, so the rumours outside were only that Shen Yuan love Jing Chu Chu’s gentleness and beauty and was sincerely treating her well.

The Jing family was hard at work portraying Jing Chu Chu as a moving beauty, but one do not know how others would see it as it made Shen Yuan seem extremely oppressive.

In the Minister’s residence, Sun Cai Nan looked at the invitation in his hand and crumbled it into a ball before throwing it into the paper basket.

“Shen Yuan that bastard!” He said hatefully.

It was not easy to meet a female that he fancied and after seeing so much of the Ding capital’s females, SuZhou’s Jing Chu Chu was particularly different. There was never once a female that had slip out from his grasp after he had taken a fancy, and in addition he had played it big and spent especially more effort on Jing Chu Chu. He had never thought that at the end Shen Yuan benefited at his expense.

A young servant cautiously said, “It is also a misunderstanding that caused Jing Young Lady and Second Shen Young Master to have no alternatives.”

One would not care what rumours were spreading out among the commoners, as the noble families knew what was going on. Sun Cai Nan already heard everything about what happened in the Shen family banquet. His face darkened, “Jing Chu Chu that slut, received this Young Master’s things and played with this Young Master.”

Sun Cai Nan was filled with displeasure even though he had seen a lot of females like Jing Chu Chu. As long as money and benefits were given, they would be won over easily. As for the matter of the Shen residence banquet, one fear that it involved Jing Chu Chu too. That woman accepted his things at one side and also schemed to marry to the Shen family at the other side? For Sun Cai Nan, the most humiliating thing was to be played by a female.

“But now, what does Young Master intend to do?” The young servant asked, “Jing Young Lady’s invitation should be accepted or not?”

Sun Cai Nan lowered his head and looked at the invitation in his hand. There was a especially light fragrance on the invitation, like the scent of a female. Just like Jing Chu Chu’s harmless appearance was always hiding a restless heart. Even if she was about to marry another, she still came over to tease him one last time.

“Of course, accept.” Sun Cai Nan laughed, “This Young Master had given her so much money and have yet to sleep with her. One is already not happy that Shen Yuan was quick footed and climbed up first, how can one not sleep once?” He stared at the young servant, “Go and respond to the invitation.”

Shen Yuan was often not in the residence these days and no matter what mischief the Jing family was up to, he rarely appeared. But the one suffering the most was Chen Rou Qiu as she needed to deal with Old Shen Furen’s anger, and also to satisfy the greedy appetite of the Jing family. The money in the residence had gotten a lot less and there was only out but no in, making one worried when seeing it.

“Why is Furen so worried these days?” Shen Wan returned back from court and asked when he saw her.

Chen Rou Qiu reluctantly smiled and since she did not want to talk about money with Shen Wan, she then said, “The Jing family keep causing chaos in the residence thus it is inevitable to worry about it.”

Shen Wan also sighed, “Mother this time really suffered a double loss after trying to trick the enemy, and Yuan-er was caught in the hind legs.”

Everyone in the Shen residence knew clearly what had happened between Shen Yuan and Jing Chu Chu. As to what happened at that time, the Third household chose to sit on top of the mountain to watch the tigers fight. At least compared to Shen Yuan, the Eldest household was more fearful. But unfortunately the Eldest household came out of it perfectly fine, and the ones who were in misfortune was the Second household and now even brought them worries.”

“These days are also hard for you.” Chen Rou Qiu said gently, “You will also be pointed out when something happens in the Shen family.”

Naturally the nobility circles would be like watching a joke when the residence is in such chaos. Shen Xin was a coarse person and was not afraid of others pointing at him, but Shen Wan was focused on his name, so these days it would most likely not have been easy for him.

But Shen Yuan did not even drag it at all, thus this could only say that he had a more important thing to do. Shen Miao really could not think of any matter that was more important.

Shen Miao was unable to snoop into what Shen Yuan was scheming as he was often not in the Shen residence.

“Young Lady need not worry. That is right.” Jing Zhe suddenly thought about something, “Tao Yuan said that Biao Young Lady sent a message to that side and had received a reply, so she will go for the appointment tomorrow.”

Shen Miao’s eyes brightened, “Very good.” Shen Yuan made her feel uneasy so it was better that some things happened as soon as possible.

They were discussing matters here and in the pavilion of Feng Xian Pawnshop, there were people also talking about this matter.

  4. Ugh, headed in a bad direction.

    I don’t like seeing Shen Miao feeling “lost”. She has prior knowledge that Shen Yuan is going to betray her family, why is she still confused at what’s going on? She also needs to make her move on Fu Xiu Yi, he has a whole lifetime of debt to be paid to her. Why is she still playing games with Mo Qing and Teacher Pei?

    The Imperial Family is a sad sack of sh*t. Instead of worrying about enemies, they scheme against their own people that support them. Foolish and paranoid Emperors a dime a dozen, hard to find a wise emperor.

    • Well, it’so one thing to know that someone hates you, it’s another to know the exact way they’re going to kill you. I think the butterfly effect has started to set in. Shen Miao might know what Shen Yuan did to bring her family down the last time around, but she’d acted competently this time and forced the second and third households to defend themselves and go on a different path. For all that she knew about Shen Yuan, she has less eyes and ears in Fu Xiu Yi’s circle, so its not a surprise that she doesn’t know.

      As for Mo Qing, I don’t think she’s trying to get Teacher Pei–she ignored him, after all. She’s still angling for a bigger fish, but as we readers aren’t told of who she’s after o her precise plans, we have no idea who this bigger fish might be.

      It’s not easy being a wise emperor too. It takes skill, intelligence, diligence and magnanimity, and I doubt the emperor has more than two of the traits needed at any one time. Of course, the saddest thing here is that the emperor won’t even try.

        No.. I think SM does not have previous knowledge of this, and tho the new presente is getting affected by her actions now, I don’t think this is entirely butterfly effect, I think this part just didn’t happen in the past at all…

        Let’s think of it,
        In the past, SY did scheme for Shen Qiu to marry Chuchu, yes
        And he might have spent all that time collecting material on the Shen Family to foil/conter them and make them fall..

        But I think he did not use it.
        First, cause the Shen Familly fall (and by that I mean the 1rst and only Shen Household, and not those 2nd and 3rd rates, generic, Shens XD) only happened much later (as in, *years* later), and when it did, I don’t remember who caused it and with what material, but I think it was Fu Xiu Yi and after having used all their assets, no?

        And second, cause in previous life SM flung herself into that damn prince house and made him marry her…
        So, the first Shen’s merits and powers all became Fu Xiu Yi’s to use.
        so it was in his direct interest for them to stay very mch well and powerful thank you, at least he ended up using them and all their assets and military power to both get himself on the throne, and then to keep it…
        As said before, it was only after sucking them dry that he let his other allies (generic Shens) to trample on them so he could get their favour and rid himself of the 1rst Shens.

        So that being said..
        This SY plans probably didn’t happen/got put into motion, and thus SM probably has no knowledge of them.
        And this makes me hella anxious, cause even if SM can deal with it, she may need time to do so… What she may not have if this all hits them in the head without her knowing before and thus having time to prepare for it.

        Also, about Teacher Pei..
        Really interesting. And I think Pomello is right.
        Question is, did SM expect him to appear? Maybe he appearing is within her expectations. He could be what she is after, and she’s not only waiting for him to appear, but for something more to happen (like him taking some action?) so it’s all withing her plans.
        Or her plans are even more profound, and like Pomelo said she’s going after another, or maybe she’s going after both (I wouldn’t risk this off, it’s SM after all XD )
        maybe he is a bonus prize (tho I think the chance of him being an unexpected one is little), and SM has already accounted for him, and how to use him.

        But if he isn’t the final prize, then who is it?
        Maybe one of her uncles? Fu Xiu Yi? Someone in his circle?
        A conter/someone else to use against the ones mentioned before?
        The mistery continues 😦

        And Zaza’s comment about a wise emperor..
        Ohhh, this is not ominious at all >_<
        and why does this makes me think of the country SM was a hostage for years in? x_x

Since when has our Empress failed to get revenge? Maybe this is the time when SY will have is own downfall. But I really hope that SX and Q and LXY will be alright.   10. Thanks for the chapter! Yess, now the situation is starting to heat up, with Shen Miao and the first household already unwittingly straying into the net of Fu Xiu Yi’s people. We haven’t seen Xie Jing Xing in a while, so there is no doubt that he’s also preparing his own schemes and ploys, and we’ll be treated to a grand play once he returns to the board.

    My suspicion right now is that Xie Jing Xing already knew/could predict the broad brush of Shen Yuan (and Fu Xiu Yi’s) plan. He’s letting it proceed because he wants to see how Shen Miao will handle it. Also, if push comes to shove and the Shen family actually still end up being stuck in a tight spot that would require some extreme sacrifices from Shen Miao, only _then_ would he step out into the light and into their presence, offering assistance.

    Oh no, this would not be done out of the goodness of his heart (what is this goodness are you talking about? If he can, he’ll take his heart out of his chest and show you how black it is). It will be done because he could help the first Shen household…and he had an idea of how they could help him and his cause. It will be a mutually beneficial arrangement. Like, say…the first Shen household would have to hitch their entire family to his cause and support all his movements if Shen Miao ended up married to him.

    I’ve got a sentence I want to ask about , though:

    Is the word you’re trying to use ‘fearful’ or ‘frightening’? Fearful implies the first Shen household are filled with fear, while the second implies that they induce fear in other people. My gut feeling says you’re aiming for the second word.

    Ji Yu Shu, I must admit he’s my favorite male character beside the pure Mo Qing. Just because he’s always secretly standing at Shen Miao’s side, he’s already win many point for me. On the other hand, may you burn in hell, Gao Yang and XJX.

  17. If Shen Miao might be lost that story should be end hihihi…just jokes. I wanna know how Shen Qiu with Feng An Ning, Pei Lang in Bao Xiao Lu, and also Fu Xiu Yu who always disappeared but influence this Shen Yuan scheme. There are so many question which unanswered.

    I was so happy in the beginning of the chapter.. The Jing Family causing a ruckus and making Old Furen taste her own bitter medicine/see how insuferrable she herself is..

    I must say, at the very first I was kinda wishing things happened slowly.. with time, so SY would suffer more.
    Then, with this chapter (and the anxiety creeping in from the one before) I started to think, omg! imagine if it’s a scandal in the day of the marriage!! O_O >oo<

    • Ha! I’m in the same position as you are. This circus is a long time coming, and Shen Miao had been able to neatly pull the first Shen household away from all the scheming and stupidity of the Jing family that we’re all happy to be rubbernecking their trainwreck (so much schadenfreude for the Old Furen’s suffering! Eat your own medicine, you old bat). I think my sense of danger/crisis has been recalibrated ever since Shen Miao managed to dodge that sadistic Prince’s proposal–that was one of the scariest moment in the story. Unless Shen Yuan managed to find something as deadly, it would probably be only a small bump for Shen Miao.

      A scandal on the day of marriage? You don’t say? Wow, I didn’t even think about just how bad it could be, but now that you say that, I’m suddenly looking forward to _that_ happening, ha ha.

        Hadn’t thought that, by separating the 1rst Shens from the generic ones, that avoided having to deal with the Jings.

        I wonder how happy and how relieved they must have been when they saw they didn’t have to put up with them too

        Though it was all done so she could sink the 3rd rate ones without compromising her familly, not having to deal with Chuchu’s Family must have been the biggest reward.
        If one Old Furen is already insufferable, imagine a whole family lol
        Even the old bat couldn’t put up with it x’D

        Strangely enough, I wasn’t much worried with the whole Prince Yu ordeal I think
        Of course the consequences were horrible,
        but SM had means, knowledge, and ppl who could support her
        Somehow I knew she would pull through.

        But this matter now, I’m worried.
        Cause she not only doesn’t have knowledge from the past, but it also seems she doesn’t know what is in motion. And if it is.
        It seems she only got na inkling it might not be a bluff now.

        And though with SY it won’t be a horrible future like with Prince Yu, just probably death, he’s scheming agasint the whole family.
        And since the beginning it’s been said he is a terrible and very smart oppenent.
        One, that even she has to pay attention and cannot understimate.

        So I’m more anxious.

Really hope she doesn’t suffer a set back k prefer it when all her plans go accordingly, otherwise goes it revenge if she can’t obtain it and also those two children of hers that she will never see again

  33. How could xie jing xing have died in the last life with arrows in his heart in the past life having so much background like this? He had taken the place of his dad to fight in the battle but he’s obviously not loyal to the emperor nor dead’s figure. Shen miao said that she still don’t know what caused the fall of the xie house in her last life. I think xie jing xing forged his death in the last life or he really died and he was also reborn just like shen miao and are making things different this time
