Rebirth of the Malicious Empress of Military Lineage: Chapter 71 (Part 2)

Just to vent my frustration… I found some websites and wattpad posting my translations without crediting. If your read this please take it down as this is very demoralising and it is very irritating. It’s not that hard to ask for permission! Argh!

Back to the story… Shen Xin and gang is returning back to Shen Miao’s side…

Chapter 71: Setting Fire to the Ancestral Hall (Part 2)

Around ten Li (1 Li = 500m) outside the capital, there were horses drinking from a frozen creek. And at the withered grassland that seemed to have yellowed, some soldiers were taking a rest.

Sitting furthest away from the rest of the soldiers was a middle-aged man, his complexion was bronze in colour, most likely due to the sun and rain during the battlefield but his strength could be seen. His stature was like a little mountain and his thick brows were righteous and awe-inspiring with big eyes. Together with a full beard, in one glance one could tell that he had a forthright character.

The female that was sitting at his side was stroking the head of the horse. That woman was also middle-aged and wore a green short jacket and a pair of gold embroidered pants, and her hair was tied up in a simple bun. She had a pair of lively eyes and looked pretty but the thing that attracted others was her air of valiant heroism. There was a pair of double silver bracelet around her waist that made ding-ling sounds as she stroked the horse.

“Furen, there is still about one Shichen (1 shichen = 2 hours) before the capital is reached.” The middle-aged man laughed, “After spending all the time in the Northwest, the air is sweet upon returning to the capital.”

“How is the Northwest bad?” The woman’s beautiful eyes glared and asked forcefully, “I grew up in the bitter cold Northwest and if you like sweetness, why did you marry me for?”

That man quickly begged for mercy, “Furen is right, this capital has a trace of sweetness and not suitable for us coarse people. The Northwest is better, one can still hunt deep in the mountain in winter, and silver foxes run all around that can be hunted and then given to Furen for a coat.”

When the woman heard it, her lips raised to a smile as she scolded while laughing, “Seeing an official and speaking bureaucratically!”

These two people were not others but the formidable Grand General Shen Xin and his Furen, Lou Xue Yan. Today they returned in a rush in order to participate in Old Shen Furen’s birthday celebration. Before this, they had not disclose anything to the Ding capital as they had received the surrender letter in advance. Mostly likely it was to give the people in the capital a pleasant surprise that they came back this early in triumph.

“We have yet to seen Mother’s birthday celebration before.” Luo Xue Yan said, “In the previous years, it was always after the year ends that we returned and gave Mother the bestowments that His Majesty gave you, as longevity presents. In a rush to return today, one do not know if this fire rat (T/N: no idea what is it, just take it as a type of huge breed of rat) coat will enter Old Taitai’s eyes.”

“Why would it not enter Old Taitai’s eyes?” Shen Xin heard it and immediately asked, “This is a good thing and even in the battlefield, this is also a treasure. With it, you can be invulnerable to knives and spears. At the beginning, in order to hunt that fire rat, I kept watch in the mountain for seven days and seven nights so if you insist on giving it to Mother, I will… Give it to you.” As his words reached the end, Shen Xin’s voice gradually softened. Obviously his words were somewhat uncongenial but a human’s heart is not a scale, and there were some parts that had bias. Even though Old Shen Furen treated Shen Xin very well, she was after all not his real mother and since there was no blood relationship, Shen Xin naturally dotted his own wife more. Moreover Luo Xue Yan followed him into the battlefield to fight normally and this fire rat cloak was more useful to her than to Old Shen Furen. If it was not because of Luo Xue Yan insistence to give it to Old Shen Furen, Shen Xin would have already gave it to Luo Xue Yan.

“What do you know.” Luo Xue Yan stared at him, “You have missed Old Taitai’s birthday every year and even though all of the rewards that His Majesty bestowed you were given to Old Taitai, who will really truly know. The last time we returned to the capital, I actually heard that people in the capital said that you purposely chose not to be close to Mother. I do all this, all for you. Even if you do not worry about reputation, Jiaojiao cannot be associated with an unfilial father.”

When these words were spoken, Shen Xin was also silent for a long time. It was indeed that the Ding capital was not like the Northwest region that was bitter and cold, and did not have traps from the enemies’ knives and spears. But how can it be considered as truly peaceful. Both of them, husband and wife, were not in the capital and the rumours would of course run rampant which was very maddening.

Luo Xue Yan continued saying, “You know that I do not know of all the twisting and tricky around the inner courtyard, as our Luo family do not have so many rules and regulations. I can only use the simplest method. This fire rat cloak is precious and if it enters Old Taitai’s eyes and makes her happy, when everyone sees that, the rumours would naturally be self-defeating.”

After a long while, Shen Xin then said, “It still Furen that thought out well.”

“I did not do it for you but for Jiaojiao.” Luo Xue Yan snorted and suddenly looked sullen, “Both you and I are most of the year not in Ding capital, even though the Northwest region’s conditions are brutal and Jiaojiao is still young of age and cannot be brought over. But during all these years, we did not personally taught or accompanied her, it is us that let her down.”

When Shen Xin heard it, he sighed again and hung his head as a touch of pain flashed in his eyes.

There were no heartless parents under the skies, and there were no parents that did not love their children. But he and Luo Xue Yan were unable to control their destiny who was to fight in the battlefield, but Shen Miao could not follow. When two armies were at war, all the methods were dazzling and killing the opponents’ relatives were common, and then they could only reluctantly and painfully separate from their daughter. At least in the Ding capital, one did not need to worry about Shen Miao’s safety.

Luo Xue Yan seemed to be sadder as she thought and continued speaking, “I often think it was truly safe putting Jiaojiao in the capital. Without parents by her side, was she really living happily? When we meet up with her every year, she always treat us coldly, but for whatever reasons it were, it would all be our fault. So no matter what she did, we cannot blame her at all.”

Shen Miao was not close to Shen Xin and his wife or even Shen Qiu because these so-called family did not accompany her since childhood. She was close to Ren Wan Yun and Chen Rou Qiu and even Old Shen Furen, because these people had contact with her all the time and was considered as ‘family’ in her eyes. And Shen Xin and his wife treated their daughter with being subservient to her every wishes, because this was all caused by them.

Shen Xin patted Luo Xue Yan’s shoulder, “There will always be a day where JiaoJiao will understand our difficulties.”

“Will she really understand?” Luo Xue Yan smiled bitterly, “There are some times where I would think that the unruliness of JiaoJiao was actually caused by who else? Shen residence…” She suddenly shut up and glanced at Shen Xin somewhat upset.

Shen Xin naturally understood the meaning outside her words and there was a slight change in his expression. A moment later, he sighed and held his beloved wife’s hands, “Furen worry too much. Mother and DiMei would teach JiaoJiao well and if is not right JiaoJiao would not be so close with them.”

Shen Miao’s attitude towards the two ShenShens was so good that it made one jealous. As such even if one have some ideas, it became nondescript.

“It is me that worry too much.” Luo Xue Yan said. She was a precious treasured Di daughter of the Northwestern Luo family and was also from a military lineage family. Even though it was a third ranked official, everyone else in the family were iron-blooded men. Luo Xue Yan was the youngest little sister and there were three older brothers in front of her, so ever since she was born there were only parents and older brothers in the family and there was not much filthy events, thus the knowledge on shameful secrets of the large families was little and she did not understand the sinister in it.

If she were to know about it, she would definitely be willing to take the risk and keep Shen Miao at her side, and not let Shen Miao stay in that terrible Shen residence.

Just as they were speaking, they heard someone behind calling out, “Father, Mother.”

Shen Xin’s expression dropped and he angrily said, “When there is someone outside, call me…”

“General Shen!” The oncoming person quickly said.

“Do not be bothered about your father.” Luo Xue Yan rolled her eyes at Shen Xin, “Putting on airs.”

The oncoming person was a twenty-something youth and had a dignified look. He had a wheat-coloured skin and when he laughed, there were two dimples on his face which added a rare childishness to his face. This young man looked quite similar to Luo Xue Yan and was Shen Xin’s Di son, Shen Qiu.

Shen Qiu was twenty-two this year and was brought along by Shen Xin when he was ten to experience the battlefield, saying that a strict teacher produces outstanding students. Shen Qiu was also brave, after so many years, he had earn a few meritorious deeds and was currently a fourth rank small General.

“Father, Mother, your birthday gift is set then what do I give?” Shen Qiu scratched his hand and was in a somewhat loss.

“This muddled-headed boy, why ask us on what gift to send. A man should make the decision swiftly, how to go to the battlefield if one cannot make a small decision like this!” Shen Xin seized the opportunity to criticise his son.

“I have not participated in the Grandmother’s birthday celebration for a long time.” Shen Qiu awkwardly said, “I also do not know what to give and cannot report up how many enemies I have killed. It is not auspicious for the birthday celebration.”

Lou Xue Yan laughed at Shen Qiu’s words, “It is alright. Previously His Majesty rewarded you with a bolt of fine silk brocade, you should give it to Old Furen. I heard that there is a shortage of this kind of fine silk brocade in the Ding capital that even the Ladyships in the Palace would not have any. If Old Taitai gets a blot, she would naturally be happy.”

“But that is to give to Younger Sister!” Shen Qiu hurriedly said.

“Let the matter drop.” Shen Xin waved his hands, “Have you seen your Younger Sister liking such brocade?”

Even though Shen Xin did not know a female’s likings, he knew that this daughter of his did not liked those elegant materials and prefered to wear gold and silver, the more tacky they were the better. Even though he was helpless, he could only leave it to her as she was happy. Even though the fine silk brocade was beautiful, Shen Miao would not necessarily appreciate it.

Shen Qiu heard it and felt that his Father made sense so he bowed his head and squatted down before saying softly, “This time because of the rush return, one did not bring any gift for Younger Sister. Thinking about it made one feel guilty.”

In fact Shen Qiu’s and Shen Miao’s relationship in the past was very good, and both sister and brother supported each other and life was considered blissful. However, Shen Qiu started following Shen Xin to the battlefield every year and then only saw Shen Miao once a year. Afterwards, Shen Miao’s temperament worsened with each passing year and both brother and sister almost did not exchanged any words. No matter how much Shen Qiu wanted to get closer to this Younger Sister, Shen Miao would only give him a lukewarm attitude.

Shen Qiu did not know of the reason but Shen Miao knew. In fact it was Shen Yue and Shen Qing and also Gui Momo that circuitous attacked and reminded her that her parents only brought Shen Qiu along by their side, and it was obvious that they valued males and belittled females. Sons could carry on the ancestral line so they were valued, whereas daughters were not valued as much. Shen Miao was young and was easily swayed by a few words, and when she saw this elder brother, she naturally felt that he had stolen all of her parents’ love and felt hateful towards him, thus she was not willing to be close with him.

“Never mind.” Shen Xin patted the dust of his body and stood up, “Call all those brothers up and continue the journey back. Must return to the Ding capital in one Shichen (1 shichen = 2 hours)!”

      • It’s 2 am right now and i cannot stop reading. Getting goosebumps just thinking about how the 3 of them will react once they witness the new, empress-like daughter of theirs!

On another note: people bashing on the family have loss touch with reality. Cannot apply modern society values to ancient Chinese — does not work that way.

Even if her mother is ignorant on the dangers her goddamn father shouldnt be, everything that happened to her in her last life is her goddamn parents fault, if i were her i would use em up until nothing is left and discard them. have never seen a more useless people in my life.

And as this has mentioned before, how much do you think men can really look underneath a woman’s mask? Either way, her parents are rarely home due to the fact they their FIGHTING for their country in the North.
Not to mention the fact you most will NOT understand etiquette of ancient China. And to top it off, you won’t have the things that ancient Chinese look for in women (Talent in qin, painting, embroidery, etc.) and you don’t know how to speak nor write Ancient Chinese.

      • Yue Miking. So? She’s the one who bore the brunt of the Shen Second and Third household’s evil. Not her parents.

Plus even in Victorian England children were treated cruelly. It was tolerated. Did it make it right? No.

David, the only reason I don’t hate her parents is because of Shen Miao’s feelings for them. Why would I be just as cruel as other people who would force someone like her to forgive other people who had wronged them by forcing HER to NOT forgive those she felt had NOT done wrong to her?

      • Well her parents and those close to her also take the burnt of it. Who killed them in the last life? Who plotted Shen Qiu to marry that woman and died miserably? Who plotted the end of her 4 maids? It is the 2nd and 3rd Shen household. Just like Shen Miao being the blind girl she is, her family is also blinded by them. Just because Shen Miao is blessed to have a second life hence seeing the truth behind her relatives’ masks earlier than her parents and big brother, you all calling them utter garbage and useless. Shen Miao is also part of that useless garbage then for falling into their schemes before. Bruh.

Her mother already explained that the weather up the north border is unsuitable for little kid, even those enemies that loved to target defenseless relatives as hostages for some exchanges were common scenes. Mother Luo already had suspicion over Shen Miao unruly conducts, but can you see how they dispel that idea? That is how true military people that value relationship is. That is why they can die for the monarch. You go calling it stupidity, but that is what enabled their generations to continue the legacy and motivate themselves to protect their country. Shen Miao was 2 when Shen Qiu was 10. After that, for all those years the bribed Gui Momo, SQ and SY continue brainwashing her into hating Shen Qiu and her parents. What can they done? Nothing. Just try to redeemed what they have wronged her; that is not being there as she grows up. They already said this is their difficulties, and luckily Shen Miao is brighter and smarter than you all for realising and understanding that; not blaming her pastlife happenings as their faults.
Though I wonder how Shen Miao will fare as she faced with her very ‘alive’ family that died by “her hands” (as she had this conception that she is the one that pushed her family into the fire).

  2. These are the worst parents in history
I would kinda let it slide if the mother was dead, but no
This crap family abandoned her with relatives, the mother couldve stayed in the capital and raised her, but oh no, Shen Xin needs to get his dick wet, screw my daughter

    • shen furen was also a soldier, though I agree

better to have my mother by my side even if she doesnt know how to deal with the inner court, she couldve learnt all those things while raising her daughter like 14 years isnt a short time to learn, also she wasnt purposely raised to be ignorant like miao was, she shouldnt be easily fooled
because afterall her daughter learnt to deal with them all on her own

      Liked by 3 people

      • Shen Miao learnt to deal with them with the cost of her family, maids, children and eventually her own death. Did you want this sequence to happen to Mother Luo instead? Reborn is a cheat. Shen Miao becomes “brighter aka not blind anymore” since she had this cheat.

You should realised every people had their own difficulties and path of life. Mother Luo was raised into Military family with no female siblings much less, other Shu daughters plotting. So she isn’t exposed to this 2nd and 3rd Shen household backyard fighting style. Read further to see how Luo military families interact with one another, and compare them with 2nd and 3rd Shens’ of political line. It is like heaven and earth.

Who can guarantee that had she stayed back (though I doubt the Emperor will allow that since she is a soldier, not dick wetter, such absurdity! Where is you patriotic soul went to?) and raised Shen Miao at the household, she won’t fall into schemes of other household and died early (read further to learn how she died, that is simply miserable).

They didn’t abandoned her, they tried to close their distance. Who knows they might had plans to take her too like Shen Qiu once she hit 10 y.o too but the blind Shen Miao at that time already brainwashed to alienated her family? Easily fooled or not depends on people trust. Once you trusted the wrong person then that is it. It is simple, just like Shen Miao that once trusted her 2nd and 3rd ShenShen more than her family. Just like Shen Xin that trusted Old Shen Furen and his Shu siblings.

As the person with “gifts” of the seeing, Shen Miao, that knows why her own family falls to such extends in the last life of course will prevents that. I believe she will makes her family saw what she saw, and that is the way to correct the present and future as the past was already the past.

    • My sentiments exactly. She says no parent could ever not love their child but in the end she’d rather leave behind her daughter to follow the husband. It’s fluffy for them. But what about the child? At least they had to take responsibility. AT LEAST ONE OF THEM. And yet they leave her with the relatives and ignorantly say that the relatives must be treating her well. Oh my gosh, even you guys doubted for a while and you still shut your eyes. I can forgive them since they ‘genuinely’ love her. But I can never forget how they left behind a young girl in a house full of snakes.

Caring and still doing such shit is worse than openly not caring like the 2nd and 3rd family do

  6. I still don’t entirely blame the second and third residence. Her parents are at fault for everything! The mom is lamenting “oh, she is cold to us when we et home for a few weeks after not seeing her for an entire year.” The dad is lamenting “Oh, she is closer to the other residences.” Well you know what? One of those years, why didn’t at least the mother or the brother – if not the all important general father – stay home one year to take care of and grow a relationship with their child? No I blame the parents.

At the beginning of this chapter, the mom and dad talked on and on for a few paragraphs about respecting Old Furen. I heard nothing about their daughter.

They are not cute. I hate all three of them right now. Yes, go gift everything you have to Old Furen. Right now, you lot are about the same level in my eyes.

I’m so angry with these three. And I can’t be the only one! ????

  8. They have good intentions but I somehow still feel sour.
The original and young Shen Miao, I fully understand why she’d loathe her parents. Even without the side characters fanning the flame, it’d still impact on her emotional relation towards them.

This chapter hurts me a little. This family is so simple that they were deceived by the rotten family. Not once did they suspect anything, even the general who should be able to sniff out some fishy shit couldn’t detect anything and it badly affect his daughter.
I just feel the slight anger, even if it wasn’t technically their fault. Being neglected is not nice, and child-parent relation is important during children’s growth period.

*sighh* anyways, still loving the story. ❤️ Thank you translator and author

  9. How could it be a misunderstanding that they favored the son?? Since her mother can join the battlefield, they should’ve just promised little Miao to follow after she turned 10 as well! Not only were they unaware of how she was being treated/raised, they never even gave her something to look forward to when they came back! What is meeting once a year?? The downfall of the Clan wasn’t only on Miao!!

  10. Hi! I’m from Korea and I really enjoy this novel translated in English!(Unfortunately, I don’t know Chinese) I saw you didn’t know about Fire-rat(火鼠/화서), right? That is a legendary creature in Northeast Asia(among Korea, China, and Japan). In Myth, 火鼠 lives in the volcanic fire so their fur or wool has a natural warmth without warming it & didn’t burn in the fire. In many old Asian novels/legend represented 火鼠 coat as high-priced gift/the gift from heart, etc. I hope my tip can improve your translation.

  11. I was a bit surprised on all the hate for her parents. On second thought, it is understandable, but I still don’t think they are bad. Ofc, their actions did lead to a lot of mess in her previous life, but overall, they are simple people. The things in capital are so complicated mostly ’cause half of the upper class (all the women and some ‘ scholars’) have no work to do. If they were all busy doing something productive, I bet things would be much simpler. SM’s parents are busy with security matters, so they won’t even imagine the useless schemes the elite back at home come up with. I think she doesn’t really blame them either, but it’s incredibly sad how she can’t open up to them like before. There will always be a ridge, precisely due to her guilt and experiences.

I dont hate her parents because miao was partly at fault, even though it really wasnt her fault all neither lmao (I want the best for their family TT)

I had a gut feeling that they would be like this thought, its almost always the same when someone is a military family, theyre like low on “inner court” attitude, very straight forward
so by that reason too that I cant hate his parents….

also her brother sounds cute uwu

    • Absolutely this. I see so many people tryna excuse what her parents essentially did. Let’s get the facts straight: they neglected her. That is objectively bad and you should all stop tryna defend it.

However, does that mean they should all get boiled to death? That’s honestly more of a subjective thing, and since Shen Miao is willing to forgive them, I’ll accept it on my part.

I just wish people in the comments stop tryna defend it saying stuff like oh they loved her tho. They didnt know. NO. They were the adults in the situation. They were her parents and are automatically held responsible, strictly because they are HER PARENTS.

And to those who are tryna say that SM was somewhat at fault, y’all are twisted for blaming the literal child in the circumstance.

      • THIS!! I’m more angry at people who kept on trying defending them. Seriously children are like a blank paper, whichever write a story down in their mind, that’s what they will remember for a lifetime. If this family so called love her so much then why they don’t freaking gave her teacher that was actually on their side? Going home between the brother or mother each take turn in 3 years and accompany her for a year. Something like that will not make her felt abandoned in last life and make her try to be closer to the second and third family. Can’t people see the line why she always wanted to follow those two bit*hes? Because she’s freaking lonely! Also I hate the author to wanna try whitewash the family deed in the past life.

  16. Fire rat is a mythological creature that lives around volcanoes in… china? East Asia? Its fur is fire proof and is made into fire proof robes.

Not sure about how it’s featured in Chinese mythology, but in Japanese myths, a goddess(kaguya I think?) requested it, among other legendary rare items to… I think make it impossible for suitors to win her hand? It’s also featured in the Japanese anime Inuyasha lol.

  17. I hate this parents too. I mean… i understand that the mc only realised her mistakes in the new life, but, come on ! Her parents are adults, she was manipulated since she was a baby, SHE have excuses for her behavior, they don’t. Her father grown up as a master of the house, with a father who favored him. That alone should imply that he should’ve been properly educated, so for him to understand the plots in the house shouldn’t be that difficult. ESPECIALLY since his daughter obviosly was not educated right, BUT NOOOO, he choose to put all the blame on his daugther personality. PLS . I know we all want to like the characters that are in good relationship with the mc, because that way we enjoy the novel more. But the people who are finding excuses for the parents are naive AF. They could’ve left someone behind to protect her ( other then the maids) and could’ve ASK HER IF SHE WAS DOING FINE. AND MAYBE , JUST MAYBE, take one hour or two, and explain why the way she dressed and talk would be bad for her, other then just critizice. ᕙ( ︡’︡益’︠)ง That said, i know that it is just that the author needed to put the parents away so the plot would be desenvolved, and now she need them to be good people so the MC would have SOME allies. But really, this way of doing things is a little lazy on the author part. The justification the author used was not enough for us forgive the parents. But i’ll choose to ignore this one, after all, one less enemy is a good thing. Thanks for the chapters TL ❤ You are awesome ! ᕙ(`▿´)ᕗ

  18. My mom had the opportunity to abandon me and leave for a better life with my older brother, while I’d get raised by relatives. Then she had the opportunity to leave both me and my brother to our relatives while she went overseas to make more money. Both times she declined. She realized the importance of a parent’s presence in early childhood development, and refused to have her relatives, even the seemingly loving ones, influence us. You can never truly know what’s in another person’s heart.

  19. I understand the parents’ situation in this as Shen Xin said they really had no choice but to go to war. Let’s not belittle his wife’s position in the war as she might also be one of the generals/strategist.

This is just an unfortunate situation where this family thought they left their daughter in good hands but apparently was left in a pit of vipers. And, please this situation is as real as it gets since I’m from a country that mostly have parents leaving their kids to other family members to make a better living for their family(well in this case to prevent an invasion).

But, I’d also point out that this family was quite naïve and ignorant of scheming and maliciousness of court. They were idiotically idealistic and too trusting which led to their downfall.

Side note: I was hoping that they should have been sending her letters every now and again which would count as something.

    Thanks for the chapter!

  20. Quite frankly, I believe this was meant to make us find the family endearing. They are not bad folks, but I still condemn them. To have kids and then leave them for someone else to raise is just NOT right. Children need to grow up with the love of their parents. Other people may care for them a little, but there are many things only parents can do to teach the children. Even worse when you leave the kids with people you pay to. They only care about the money or benefits, not about your child, so they won’t raise them thoroughly.

I understand that Shen Xin as a general didn’t have a choice but to obey imperial commands to go out to battle, but there is no excuse for his wife to leave her daughter behind with only maids. Even if she was unaware of the difficulties of growing up in scheming families because of her upbringing, she here expresses she is not fully certain about how the people in the Eastern courtyard are raising Miao. How could she just leave without even making sure of the people they truly are? Is she so naive that she buys any cheap acting and doesn’t even think to test them out? Even worse, these couple KNOWS Miao is not close to them as a result of them not spending time with her. She even has a bad relationship with her brother despite having been close to him as a young child. As her family, how can they just shrug their shoulders and think that’s no problem? They were supposed to do SOMETHING about it. If you notice your child is not growing up decently in someone else’s hands, how can you not bother to correct the situation and instead let it get worse until the child is helplessly rotten?

Seriously, I feel no pity for Shen Xin and Lou Xue Yan. When Miao mentions about how the other family members steal all the money, or even when she reminisces about how much her parents sacrificed as a result of her getting married as they tried their best to help her, I actually feel they were mostly trying to calm down their burning conscience, maybe even atoning, after they realized (all too late) what a big mistake they made by neglecting her. In the previous life, them having lost a lot because of their daughter’s stupid decisions was very much them reaping what they sowed. Granted, they didn’t deserve to be drained out of their blood and killed after getting used, but that’s a different point.

I seriously hope that when they arrive, not only will they see how stupidly ignorant they were about their relatives, but that also one of the maids reports to them exactly everything that went on. I want them to cry in regret and make it up to her. Though Miao feels very guilty towards them because she led them to their extermination, they are also guilty of leaving her defenseless and without guidance. If they hadn’t left her to her own devices, none of that would have happened. Still, she’s doing her best to defend them this time around, so they better give her the love they owe her tenfold.

  21. I was so happy reading the comment section for this chapter, because of Shem Miso tolerance of her terrible parents (especially her mother who really had no good reason to basically abandon her daughter) I thought I was going to be the only one going on a rant about what shitty (absentee) parents they are but thankfully others can see it too

  22. it’s weird that people are applying modern-day sensibilities to this lmaooooo, neglect is horrible in any scenario but also consider: they were required to go serve in the war

additionally, I don’t think anyone likes being suspicious that literal family members would be two-faced scheners, it’s perfectly reasonable for one not well-versed in court drama to think the best of others

the situation is sad and the parents definitely shoulder some of the blame, but it’s like people have forgotten that this is a redo story where the MC can now discern how people plotted against her

  23. I see a lot hating on the parents, is what they did right? Looking at it from when Miao point of view and what happened to her because her parent weren’t with her then no. They are the worst parents. It is understandable that she would even hate them.
But on the parents side, they had to choose btn taking their young female child who even at the age of 14 still looked 11 or 12 to the battle fields of the cold north were enemies would most likely kill her. Or leave her behind in the comfortable and relative safety of the capital with people who they trusted as family and really gave no reason to distrust. And as both the mother and father both grew up in the military were you know who your enemies and friends are.
Their only mistake was being good honest people who trusted people who were good to them. We’re they blind? Yes. even stupid? may be. But their goodness made them stupid cuz they beloved that treating someone with goodness meant that person also treated you good. They didn’t see the evil that lurked in the smiles. And that’s why in the first life they paid for it with their lives.

  24. If u r going to abandon ir child with evil relatives then atleast make sure to write letters. And keep a trusted eye on and report back . I don’t believe they can’t plant a trusted spy on her. The rubbish 2nd and3rd family has enough sense to plant spies not to mention the ‘great’ general.

  25. the way you can tell privileged people from this comment section alone. Constantly surrounded by their parents and love, and not having to worry about money or for safety. My father is in the military aswell, and seeing him is rare, with terrorist constantly on our borders they can’t relax, forget about seeing your family, even keeping yourself healthy is hard. The first time my father was allowed to leave the battle field was when he was seriously injured but had to be sent again when he was somewhat healed. Whereas I only ever get to video call my mother a few times a year because she works overseas as a maid coz she hasn’t graduated college and it has a higher pay. Danger is always hovering above my parents head, with the news about domestic violence and such common among overseas workers.
