Chapter 20: The Residence of Marquis of Lin An

The residence of the Marquis of Lin An in Ding capital was indeed magnificent. This was mainly because the Marquis Furen was the Princess Yu Qing whom the late Emperor doted on most. Originally, once he became a Fuma (Princess’s husband), the Marquis of Lin An’s military power must be returned. The late Emperor was unable to withstand Princess Yu Qing’s tantrums and whining, and let things slide. This was enough to show Princess Yu Qing’s position in the late Emperor’s heart.

Princess Yu Qing was an outstanding beauty and had the most gentle and tender temperament. After marrying into the Marquis residence, she was also doted by the Marquis of Lin An. Unfortunately the Marquis of Lin An still brought in a concubine, who was the current Madam Fang.

If Princess Yu Qing was a natural lady from a noble house, who had money and power to help one in any occupation, then this Madam Fang was a pretty daughter from a humble family. It was Madam Fang’s father who did a favour to the Marquis, and afterwards, when the family fell behind, Father Fang used this favour to compel the Marquis marry Madam Fang as a Liangqie.

Liangqie and normal concubines were different and could not be killed as one might wish. In addition, Madam Fang was willing to become a concubine and did not display any jealous behaviour, thus the Marquis did not take it to mind. Most likely, it was because noble men usually had three wives and four concubines and the Marquis of Lin An only brought in one Liangqie, which was already rarely seen. As such, the Marquis did not feel that anything was wrong.

Unfortunately, when males and females looked at a problem, especially concerning the issue of concubines, they would be poles apart. The Marquis felt that having a Liangqie was not a serious matter since a concubine was only a plaything and the person in his heart was still Princess Yu Qing, but Princess Yu Qing did not feel the same.

Princess Yu Qing grew up with the favour of the late Emperor and was also pampered all day after marrying into the Marquis residence. Her husband had only her, the official wife, so she was already used to that kind of lifestyle. Who knew that there would be a sudden appearance of a concubine. At that time, Princess Yu Qing had just given birth to Xie Jing Xin and was in her confinement period when she was hit with the news.

Madam Fang gave her greeting to Princess Yu Qing every day and wore clothes according to the rules. It would be better if she did not come, as it only made Princess Yu Qing feel more anguish. If Princess Yu Qing was an ordinary Princess, she would have found a way to make Madam Fang stumble as it was not impossible to send her away. But Princess Yu Qing was protected very well the entire time and was naïve to the ways of the world, so how would she know how to use those dirty tricks.

Nevertheless, it was the Momo who was part of the Princess’s dowry who thought of an idea to chase Madam Fang out from the house and carried it out without the Princess’ knowledge. Who knew that it not only ended in failure, but was also discovered by the Marquis of Lin An.

Even though the Marquis of Lin An was usually an unruly person, at the bottom of his heart, he had an honourable temperament and could not stand all the petty little tricks that women played, so he severely rebuked Princess Yu Qing at that time.

It was the first time since Princess Yu Qing married over that she got into an argument with the Marquis of Lin An. She was also one who would not swallow any grievances, so she did not mention the matter of the Momo and only opposed the Marquis of Lin An with equal harshness, so much so that the Marquis turned and left abruptly.

She initially thought that the Marquis of Lin An would visit her after a few days, but who knew that after a month had passed, the Marquis only rested at Madam Fang’s. A female during confinement period must not be upset and Princess Yu Qing kept the anger inside leading her to succumb to a bout of serious illness.

Deep down, the Marquis of Lin An deeply loved his wife and wanted to visit Princess Yu Qing, but on that very night, he received the Imperial edict to go into battle and could not even inform Princess Yu Qing before he left.

Shortly after the Marquis of Lin An left, Madam Fang found out she was pregnant.

As the main household, when the Marquis was not in, Princess Yu Qing could not create problems for Madam Fang and even had to protect the child inside her. If there were any unexpected mishaps, the gossip in the capital would be how she murdered the concubine while her husband was away.

Over time, being physically and mentally exhausted, Princess Yu Qing’s health was gradually neglected and almost at the brink of collapse. When the Momo saw it, she was filled with anxiety, but Princess Yu Qing did not allow the Momo to report back to the Imperial family. She got up to write a letter to the Marquis of Lin An asking him to come back to see her.

She waited and waited, but in the end she was unable to wait for the Marquis of Lin An’s return.

Princess Yu Qing died. Three days after the burial, the Marquis of Lin An returned in triumph, but upon failing to see his beloved wife, he was deeply grieved. Unfortunately the beauty was gone, leaving behind only a grave.

At that time, the late Emperor was extremely furious and demoted the official rank of the Marquis of Lin An. Until the new Emperor took the position and pitied the loss of his talent, he was then promoted back to the Marquis of Lin An. Unfortunately, there were no more anecdotes about the ideal couple.

The Marquis of Lin An did not marry a second wife and there was only Madam Fang in the entire Marquis residence. Madam Fang also lowered her head for a more than a decade to be more low profile. Though the Marquis of Lin An cared about her children, he put all his energy on his Di son, Xie Jing Xing.

But Xie Jing Xing did not appreciate it. As he gradually became sensible, he started to become estranged from the Marquis of Lin An – Princess Yu Qing’s and the Marquis of Lin An’s love hate disputes were household analogies, thus if one wanted to know about it, it would be known.

The Marquis of Lin An was conscience-stricken by his son and would always do his best to satisfy him. However, Xie Jing Xing especially loved to adopt a confrontational attitude with his father, which made Xie Ding’s head ache in fury. In any case, he had inherited the beauty and talent of Princess Yu Qing and was a wonderful and brilliant gentleman, except for his unruly temper. This naturally made him the ideal man of the young ladies from aristocrat families.

Today was still the same.

Xie Jing Xing strode into his study.

His courtyard was the courtyard that Princess Yu Qing used to recuperate. It was far from the main courtyard and was very peaceful and secluded. Xie Ding always urged him to move nearer to the main courtyard but was always rejected by his son. The reason was that he did not want to see certain people.

His attitude towards the Marquis of Lin An had always been so cold.

His manservant pushed the door open and came in carrying a snow white flower ceramic bowl, “Fang Yiniang has cooked lotus seed porridge for Master to warm his body and said that it has been boiling for a few shichen.”

He did not like his men to call him ‘young master’ or ‘heir’ and had them call him just ‘master’. It seemed that with this, he wanted to be separated from the Marquis residence.

Xie Jing Xing cast a glance at the bowl. The porridge was shimmering and the soup was thick and fresh, it really took a lot of time to make. It was emitting a light fragrance and could move one’s appetite.

He coldly replied, “Pour it out.”

The manservant replied yes and withdrew.

Just when the servant left, a person suddenly appeared from behind the door. He lowered his head and softly said, “Master, this one has investigated thoroughly. It is the Fifth Young Lady of the First household in the General residence, Shen Xin’s Di daughter, Shen Miao.”

“Shen Xin?” Xie Jing Xin frowned.

Shen Xin and Xie Ding had political differences for many years and the Shen residence and Marquis residence each felt the other was unpleasing to the eye. As for the checks and balances of the military, it involved a lot of interest.

The Marquis residence and the Su family were good friends, so for the Shen family to warn the Su family, perhaps it was also to remind the Xie family. But for opposing people to suddenly give a reminder, what was the meaning of it? Even more so, Shen Miao was a little girl, what would she know. It was of course the Shen family who deliberately made her give the reminder. Shen Xin was currently in the faraway North-Eastern area, could it be the Second or Third household? Shen Gui and Shen Wan were very ambitious people and now that the situation in the Imperial court showed some movement, they might take advantage of the crisis for personal gain.

“Shen and Xie families are as different as the Jing and Wei rivers. For the Shen girl to suddenly show goodwill, she obviously has ill intentions.” He raised his brows as his voice became as cold as iron, “Continue investigating!”

  3. XJX’s mother’s story is really sad. Even with all that resentment, she still thought of him and did not let him make an enemy of the imperial power. Haa~ seriously. If a kid hears that kind of story, no sort of explanation will pacify him… Only time can do so and lots and lots of effort on the Marquis’ side.

Not remarrying though seems like a slap on XJX’s mother’s face though? I mean, in his point of view, it would really seem like his father favors his concubine that much. Viewing it pessimistically.

And here starts XJX fall… And obsession. He seems like he’ll be a really stubborn and possessive lover. Though that’s waaaaaaay far ahead… And it’s interesting to see how people will react with them being close. Though technically aggressive at first, based on what’s here so far, it’a not everyday XJX would actually even bother with a girl. And here is SM, who everyone thinks is an idiot, taking his attention. WOOT!!!

ON A DIFFERENT NOTE – My comment’s getting pretty long, huh?

Being so vicious to family, I can’t wait to find out how the other Shen houses would fall to ruin. Cause they should! To actually kill off the main house, and watch their neice and nephew die of their own doing, seriously!!!

Last but not the least THANKS FOR THE UPDATE!!! XoXo~

    • Thanks for supporting!!! I felt that the first step the Marquis took was wrong (bringing in the 2nd wife) and after that every other choice he made was wrong… Its of no wonder XJX did not forgive him. I am sure the Princess died due to that woman (she must have made the situation as such!!!)

Please continue with your long posts… I like reading them 🙂 Revenge is a dish served cold 😛

      • I totally agree. And i think this 2nd wife is behind all of this. She is probably a manipulative witch who caused a rift between him and his wife (like how he didn’t come see her and stayed at teh 2nd wife’s place). tsk tsk. cant wait for her to meet our little cutiepattootie shen maio. mwuahahah! empress indeed.

      • If that was my father i would never forgive him. He loved her yet he didnt even believe her and she knew nothing about it. Its so sad because she was really depressed and blamed for something she didnt do and he did what? Nothing.

  5. It looks like we’re finally seeing some conflict with the two mains!
They both sound talented and ready to butt heads! I can’t wait for more interactions between the two but it’s looking like we might have to let our FMC sort out her family first.

    Thank you for the chapter!

  6. Thanks for the chapter.

I read and reread the chapter and still have the same opinion. The Marquis was quite a moron, especially if he really loved the princess.
If so, I guess he didn’t show it well, especially by leaving to war without having seen his wife for a month. It kinda makes me want to slap the guy. lol
It’s quite subtle, but you can tell that Madam Fang took the opportunity of their argument to seduce the husband, if not, the marquis would have returned earlier to the princess to mend things. I’m quite happy that the guy felt and still feels all the consequences of his stupid decisions.
I wonder if we will still get glimpses of the Lin household, or history.

  7. Well, it’s not weird to be suspicious, especially with their family backgrounds being like that. Ah, I’m looking forward to see XJX’s reaction after hearing about SM’s bad reputation. What will he do~? Thanks for the chapter desu~

  8. But you know I couldn’t help but applause Madam Feng, I mean, to be able to become who she is right now XD

I see, so even he doesn’t understand clearly about their current situation. You know I just realized that in stories if it’s not a fight between countries then it’s a fight between power and this is the funny part as the country itself is destroying all the great talents it have, then it be weak when an enemy country arrives.

  9. Ohhh no wonder, not counting her backstabbing branch family’s manipulations and schemes, the situation ended up so dire that they needed a political hostage. I see.

  10. SM’s reputation is already well know in the capital and even to country’s borders.

Thus, this is why XJX is much more interested to find out about SM and the wise person that is believed to be guiding her since SM’s reputation and her age.

  11. Hi! Hope you’re doing well. Thank you for updating a new chapter!

I feel really sad learning about the Princess’s story. I was really curious what kind of personality does XJX’s father had since he had XJX as his son but pretty much disappointed how he treated his legal wife in favor for the concubine. I know it’s normal in this case but he could have respected her requests and learned more about the situation and won’t jumped into conclusions. It’s really heart wrenching that they didn’t even reconciled in the end. Even though he is recompensating with how much time and effort he is giving to XJX, it doesn’t changed the fact he did something upsetting towards the Princess. I mean I totally understand if XJX would hold a grudge against his father. It’s not unreasonable at all or seen as something unflial towards the elder. This was a result that the Marquis Lin An did for himself.

I think learning about his mother’s fate, there’s a possibility he would only practice monogamy in this lifetime. I mean he was literally mean with girls, and for sure he’s thinking about how manipulative women are if they tried to be. See how his father was easily swayed because of the beauty. So it’s really understandable why he is suspicious with SM. But he would be utterly surprised when he will know about SM’s fame and would wonder where the hell up was that girl everybody’s been describing when all he can see is a well-composed, pristine girl who’s lazy enough to study for the academy exams (Hail the Empress of Procastination!). Hahahaha!

Can’t wait for their other meet! Thanks once again!

    • Thanks for supporting!! I also felt sad for the Princess… To do so much for the man she loves but also be hurt that much by him. I also believe that if she was not so protected by her parents, she would have perhaps have found a way of dealing with that concubine (without leaving any traces pointing back to her). Cause and effect… Every characters’ action has a cause and effect… So many moving variables… Where is the end?

Its not something upsetting, he pretty much killed her imo. She wasnt ill or anything before that but she became ill purely from his cold attidute towards her. How could he neglect her just after she gave birth to his child? Even though it wasnt intentional, its him who killed her and i would never forgive him in my entire life if i was in Xie Jing Xin’s shoes. What a garbage..

  12. I really felt sad hearing about XJX’s mother 😦 In the end, it was kind of……regreful how she died, considering they both loved each other but it was just misunderstandings that led to her death /: I totally get why XJX has a grudge against his father and that concubine lol, and I also like how we can see how it shaped him to become who he is currently!

And I can see why he would be suspicious of SM! It’s understandable lol, and it’s going to be so funny when he finds out how everyone views SM lolol. It’s def. not going to match up with the meeting he had for her. I’m really excited for more interactions between them, and also for SM’s next moves in getting allies and such hehe ^.^

Thank you for your hard work!!!~

  13. Thank you for this chapter!

I think it’s truly sad that as readers, we immediately jump to conclusions that Madam Fang is not truly as she looks. It is definitely not without suspicion, of course, but it just goes to show how ruthless and complex relationships can be for these powerful families. Even us readers, who don’t personally experience these things (hopefully not), are able to get paranoid/suspicious just because we’ve read enough of ancient novels to know people are never as simple as they appear to be. No one can be truly nice or simple otherwise they will end up like Princess Yu Qing and die unfairly. It’s a hard balance between maintaining your own life, dignity, and reputation without becoming a ruthless and cruel human being. The same goes for Shen Miao. She was way too naive and just blindly trusted in her cousins and aunts/uncles resulting in her downfall.

It makes me sad for the people who had to live like that but thankful that I don’t because I would definitely die and be caught in other people’s traps/schemes! lol

I look forward to Shen Miao’s interactions with her family as well as her and XJX. It seems like he values loyalty and really needs people to call “family” and it’ll be nice to see the development between his and Shen Miao’s relationship throughout the novel.

Thank you for all your hard work!

  16. I can’t accept the father as well if i was xjx. It’s like a spilled milk. No matter what you do, thinhs cannot return like usual. I know how much heartache princess yu qing would feel, especially after childbirth. She has to deal with hormone changes, with her dissapointment, jealousy and her husband abandonment. The Marquis isn’t a good man. If he is, he won’t abandon a wife who just had delivered a baby for him for more than a month. Even if xjx forgive him, i won’t

    • Yeah… Thats why I did not have any problems with how XJX treated his father… Its is considered minor punishment as compared to how much the princess suffered. At least he is alive

  18. Yep. Knew I was going to hate him. It’s not his fault really. I’ve just seen this garbage relationship progression too many times. Honestly, finding a series that doesn’t have it is far more difficult than finding one that does. Hopefully the story won’t waste too much time on this tired old garbage.

I also feel for the princess, shes a princess, and yet she wasnt prepared for concubines, that was a little off, but im on her side still

I can never with these ancient chinese men,
