Chapter 19: Young Gentleman

“So it was you.”

A handsome youth walked out of the bamboo forest. He was wearing an ivory robe trimmed with silver thread, as compared to the white dumpling, it was very elegant.

He walked to Shen Miao, stopping in front of her as he looked down at her with probing eyes.

This youth was very tall as Shen Miao only came up to the height of his chest. There was an unruly laugh on his lips, as if he was looking at a child, but because of his handsome face, it was in no way offensive. If it was an ordinary female, their heartbeat would increase and their ears would have reddened.

But Shen Miao, after all, was not a true budding beauty. She glanced at that person and remained silent.

The youth’s lips hooked up and suddenly there was a sophisticated short sword in his hands. He pointed the scabbard at himself and used sword shaft to lift Shen Miao’s chin, forcing her to raise her head.

Shen Miao had no choice but to look at the other person.

But she stood straight and dignified and each spoken word was slowly weighed as if she was taught by the women in the Palace. Did she want to be the Empress? If he did not see it for himself, Xie Jing Xing would have choked on his saliva.

Looking up then down, looking left then right, she was just silly little girl.

Until she said those words.

Her features were child-like but her tone was steady and not even a trace of panic was revealed, but some impatience instead. This was actually a first for Little Marquis Xie. When other females saw him coming close they would have long blushed, which was not interesting at all.

Most likely she was too young and would not understand anything. But how did she understand the words to give the Su family?

One of his hands was placed on the tree trunk behind Shen Miao was, if someone was looking in, it seemed as if he was embracing Shen Miao in an intimate way. Xie Jing Xing lowered his head and leaned very closely to Shen Miao.

“You are not afraid of me.”

“Little Marquis is not a monster who devours people, so what is there to be afraid of.” Shen Miao said lightly, “If there is nothing else, I will go back to class first.” Finishing, she got ready to leave.

“Stop right there.” Xie Jing Xing lifted his arms and a piece of Shen Miao’s hair slid across his palm making it itch like ants crawling by. He withdrew his hands and took a few steps back to lean against the tree as he folded his arms across his chest, portraying the usual frivolous expression.

“What is your intention for warning the Su family?”

His words were like his eyes, which never concealed his sharp approach and direct impulsiveness, yet contained profound meaning.

Shen Miao sighed in her heart.

Xie Jing Xing was even smarter than she had imagined. One sentence from Su Ming Lang and he ended up here. Not only ending up here, he also questioned the purpose of the words. She only knew that he had a wide perspective from her past life but from what she saw today, it seemed that he was also someone with penetrating thoughts.

How did one hide one’s true intentions when dealing with intelligent people? Unfortunately, she never wanted to hide.

“No other reasons. Just for self-preservation.”

After finishing her words, she gave a slight greeting to Xie Jing Xing and turned around to leave without a care for anything else.

Xie Jing Xin would understand these words.

Behind her, the youth’s lips hooked up as he played the short sword in his hands.

“Su Ming Lang, what is her name?”

  5. Hi! How are you doing? So glad and grateful for this new chapter! I was about to sleep and voila! Something nice to read before going to bed and whisk myself in dreams! XD

    I like how these two met in person although, XJX is a little bit extreme, pointing a knife edge on SM. But with this agressive action, we can clearly see that he has no naught for gender differences. At least in my own deduction, he only sees characteristics and abilities of individuals and merit them through it.

    He was really cautious and skeptical around SM and I love how he didn’t underestimated her for being an inferior in both age and sex. It really gives a hint how this guy operates as a person. He may a little bit rough but anyway, I like how he is.

    Of course, XJX! SM is the real deal EMPRESS! She’s not acting like one, she’s literally THE ONE. Well, in this second chance in life, we don’t particularly know if she would get the opportunity to become the mother of all again (unless you decide to take the throne which I’ll wholeheartedly support) but clearly you cannot deny she has that certain dignified, noble augustness which added a particular charming grace around her small form. It is there, it may just take a little adjustment because of the sudden change of personality but truly it is there.

    Okay, honestly I laughed so much at the end. The cliffhanger was so amusing. XJX should have asked her when they were talking a while ago. But anyway, it went pretty well for their first interaction! And it gives me more of SML! I love that little dumpling!

    • I agree with you that XJX doesn’t care about appearances and looks beyond the surface when assessing a person. He also doesn’t have much (or any) interest in following etiquette–but he didn’t point a knife edge at SM.
      “…used the sword shaft to lift Shen Miao’s chin.”
      As I understand it, he raised her chin with the sword hilt, and the blade was actually pointed toward him–although sheathed (the scabbard is also mentioned).

    • The chapter deserves another read *wink* I honestly love this first interaction since XJX doesn’t know her name and did not ask for it. If he ask for it, it would mean that he is placing her reputation/hearsay on top of her actions instead of understanding her actions. 🙂 Thanks for supporting!!!

    Also, I always feel bad for these stories. Even if she has a second chance, she won’t have the same children again.

  13. Well they on off meetings is the best as XJX would visits SM as if it is his place with such casualness. Also SM knowing his real identity is real bonkers, a mere delicacies.

    Their departing meeting would be the best as XJX meet Empress Shen and this Empress stole kiss from XJX.

    Of course, that would be further down the road…

    This chapter is their second meeting and this meet actually sparks XJX interest on SM.

I really loved this meeting between them omggg, it showcases their personalities so perfectly and I really like how XJX treats her – like he doesn’t automatically dismiss her because of her age and gender. Instead, although he’s surprised which is understandable in that era, he looks closer and realizes how unique our wonderful SM is hehe ^.^ lol that he asked her name at the end and not when he was actually talking to her haha!

    Can’t wait for more interactions between them and to see what SM will do next! I actually want SM to meet her awful ex-husband to show him she doesn’t care about him at all anymore hehe. Thank you so much for your hard work 💖

  19. Not a bad first interaction I say. XJX doesn’t see SM by her gender and age (although he guessed it wrong) which is great. XJX got surprised by SM’s calmness, smartness and mysteriousness and SM got surprised by XJX’s intelligence as he’s smarter than she had thought. That’s cute and all. Also, I wonder if XJX a tsundere? Anyway, thanks for the chapter desu~

  23. A little typo, SM was not “thanking Little Marquis” (it was weird in context as he was forcibly lifting her chin using sword handle), she was greeting XJX using his full title :). In the raws the text was ” 谢小候爷” which can be a little confusing as the hanzi for ‘thanks’ and XJX’s surname is the same 😅
